punk
daxle To stand for what you believe, and to have thought about what you believe.
To not care so much about what you look like that you spend hours getting dressed up (and yes, this includes extensive hair spiking and chain wearing).
To realize that the majority of people going along with something does not make it right; to be willing to change what seems wrong.

emsie Punk isn't simply a form of music. Punk is a way of life, a form of politics, a mode of dress. There are so many different punk bands out there. In my mind, the two main flaws of punk are the words "sellout" and "poseur". I hate when people in the scene think they're so above everyone that they can decide who is punk and who sold out. That's not fair, and who the hell do they think they are?

the boy with the thorn in his side Punk is just a style of music. It is not any one set of fixed ideals, it is not how you spike your hair, it is not a way of life, etc. If most punk music has anything in common ideologically, it would be that many punk groups espouse the virtues of being an individual.

The only objection one would have to this definition would be that it seems to brush punk music off as JUST music (read: just trivial entertainment). Music, if taken seriously, can affect your life, it can be a reason for you to get out of bed in the morning...Punk is a style of music and has done those things for me since I was thirteen.

gone? I find it funny now. I went thru subconsciously "trying" to be what I thought punk was and then I stopped trying much cause it just happened cause I like it and now I'm getting to the essence which is unity and DIY. don't critisize others for thinking differently. if you can't find what you want, make what you want. music is at the core and fashion is a peripheral. if it's fun then do it. and yes I cut the tags off my docs cause I'm not a walking advertisement. but I'll never call myself punk cause everyone's got a different definition and I don't wanna define myself as part of a group. I define myself as me and that's it. I'm not gonna be punk cause I do or don't like NOFX (I do). I'm not gonna be hardcore cause I like All Bets Off. I'm Me. That is IT. (I hear being indignant means you don't believe what you're saying. No.) 010708

but ok I'm fake, sure. i'm a poser, although i make no claims. I like punk music, i dont advertise it like crazy. i like blue hair, i like purple hair... nothing is wrong with that.

black-dyed gel product Although I go to A LOT of punk shows, I have never once considered myself a punk. I like the music, but I find the lifestyle too much work and far too cliche to ever consider pursuing it. One is never sure he is punk anyway. If you say you are a punk you're a poseur anyway. Besides, to be a punk, you have to get deep into the research of your genre. For example, to be a true punk on long island, you must know all about the history of the scene from about 1988 onward. You must possess an innumerable number of CDs to meet this qualification as you will be required to know all of the lyrics by heart. Then there's the matter of how you must dress. You must not wear leather as not to offend the vegans, you must own a bunch of T-shirts by a bunch of extra obscure scene bands. You must detest name brand jeans and either seek out expensive skater jeans or shop at salvation army. You also must not give a fuck about what you look like, which contradicts what I said before. You must be one step ahead of the scene, therefore you can make the following comment: "I've been a fan since the beginning; now with all these new little kiddie fans, I don't know if I can even listen to them anymore." You must know practically everyone that matters at every show you go to, usually getting in for free because of this. Also, here's the biggest cliche of the punk lifestyle, you must do all of this without trying, by intuition only, and without thinking about it. In fact, the only way to be a punk is to do all of the following without making a conscious effort to be a punk.

Punk music I like. It's about unity and going against the trends of mtv. Its a little safety raft in a sea of corporatized music. I do, however, have a problem with the concept of being a punk. I feel that no one should have to meet the standards of being a true punk. I feel that no one should be a punk. I feel it should be all right to enjoy a show just because you like the music, and feel free to
do some hardcore pit dancin if you want to. I hate labels and the standards of such labels. Enjoy what you like, and live how you choose. I believe we'd have a more unified scene if people stopped worried about being a punk and just enjoyed the music and culture of said scene. I'm sorry if I've offended any punks out there, but that's just how I feel. What do I know anyway, I'm not a punk. It's just one man's opinion, the one that I live by, but you have a mind that you may use to think how you want. That's the nice part of free will.
010709
...
yummyC thanks.

you just pretty much captured my opinion, only if I were to use my own words i would have offended a zillion people and distorted what I really meant to say.

bijou Imagine that, you can go to e-bay and buy yourself a "hundred-pound-punk" kit for beginners and cut out years of dedicated research in the field of good music. I bet it comes with an instruction manual too. In my city, you can go to the local "Hot Topic" and buy backpacks with "punk rock" patches already sewn on them! This made me laugh out loud. Imagine going to high school with your new "punk" threads and shit-stompin dickies kicks, and your designer punk rock backpack, patches already in place. You walk in the door on the first day of school and three other kids walk past with the same backpack, the same patches. This concept is hilarious to me. It's genious, really. Mr Topic himself is laughing all the way to bank, exploiting all these children who so desparately want to be different. They have no creativity, just their parents credit cards or some of them their McDonalds paychecks. I'm sorry, I really usually try to be positive when I blather but I have passed this thread many times and I feel like I have to say something. I can't claim to be punk, you have to be born punk I think. I just started listening to the music in high school because there was NOTHING left. And I think that's the reason it's so popular these days, people have run out of things to do, there is (mostly) no good music being made these days. At least as far as pop goes. Bands like blink 182 and sum41 had everything layed out perfectly for them before they even learned how to play their instruments. Pop music has been waiting for the new "bad boys", the alter-egos to bands like the backstreet boys and nsync. And as much as it does make punk fans want to tunnel under ground, I have no doubt this is a trend that will pass quickly and you'll be back to where you started, getting sent to the principals office and getting beat up after school for having a mowhawk or spray-painted stencils on your leather jacket. Isn't that the way it should be? 010802

Sonya It seems that more and more the "definition" of punk relies on how one dresses. I've been condemned for listening to punk music yet not wearing plaid or dying my hair blue, or spiking it, or getting chains or piercings or a bunch of other bullshit stuff that punks are "supposed" to do or wear. I get this bullshit more and more because I now listen to music that actually means something to me for once and has a genuine influence on me. The music means a lot to me, and has inspired me to get involved in some organizations. It has opened my eyes. It has shown me that while it's good to talk, we should also act. I'm not talking about Blink crap, but bands like Propagandhi, Sick Of It All, and Anti-Flag.

People who supposedly claim to be 'punk' sometimes do not hesitate to criticize the people who share the same ideals but do not dress like them. I find this to be contradictory to punk in general. Supposedly the punk mentality (for lack of a better word) states that you should not care about material objects and that should include clothes. It states that you should not have to conform to other people's wishes, and you should say and dress however you want. So why is it that so many spoiled brats (yes spoiled brats) who go out of their way to "look" the stereotypical version of punk, feel the need to jump down someone's back when they don't dress like them? These same kids who claim to be punk start bitching when other people do not conform to their wishes by not wanting to spike up their hair and all of that rubble. Don't get me wrong, if people want to spike their hair I'm all for it. I'm just saying that I don't want to I don't need some jackass who claims to be punk and believe in punk ideals harping on me for not being "hardcore" enough. Whatever the hell 'hardcore' means now.

The ideals, the beliefs, the politics...hell if you know anything about the band Propagandhi you'd know that to them, the politics are very important. If you share the same beliefs then the music only serves to fuel your beliefs. And furthermore the kids who like Blink 182 or Sum 41 and claim to be "punk"....that is also contradictory. Granted we may never reach a sound definition of what punk really means, but I have yet to see Blink 182 or Sum 41 DO rather than sing/talk. As far as I can see Blink 182 has evolved into just trendy music for the portion of the MTV crowd that did not conform to the boyband clique. Sum 41 just came along at the right time. The fact that they're both on MTV just confirms that there is a large hypocrisy in this genre we call "punk". They obviously put in a lot of effort to get into the mainstream, to get on pop television. See what I'm getting at here?

I personally do not claim to be 'punk' because there is no real definition. Perhaps being punk doesn't have anything to do with definition at all. Perhaps it's being chaotic, disorganized, and unable to be labeled, categorized, or subsidized? All I know is that what I've learned about punk in general and what I see in a lot of the supposed punks today do not match.

Someone wrote earlier about how you literally have to go out of your way to do all of these things in order to be considered punk. As if punk is a trend....I don't know what to think anymore. It seems like when something becomes a trend the meaning itself is taken away. Wipe away all the spiked hair, the plaid, and the torn pants and what do you have left? If you know what you stand for great, if not...then maybe you ought to spend less time making yourself up and more time finding out what it is that you stand for.

Oh and it's also interesting when I hear supposed punks using the words like queer and fags and being blatantly against homosexuality....due to the fact that the definition of punk is still in question, I may be diving into hypocrisy here. Some people just seem to miss the entire of point of the same music they say they live by. To define punk is probably something that can never happen.

it came originally from a jailhouse term. the little guys, the ones who'd just get used as currency. Throwback Punk is undefinable, in many ways. Punk is only this: The advocation of independant thought. To be a "punk", one does not have to have a piercing, or green hair, or blue hair, or be obnoxious. To be a "punk" (as much of one as possible, anyways), you only have to think for yourself, make your own decisions, speak what you know is right. And above all, never apologise for your beliefs. I don't care if you wear "corporate" clothes, or studs, or chains, or rags, or a damn barrel... if you are true to youself, you're as punk as they come, kid. 020417
...
silentbob I agree. its a punk kind of attitude. As well as standing up and fighting back when you see something is wrong. and actually trying to make a difference.
I think the same can be said about Emo. People want to know what the boundaries are and things like that. It doesn't have to be so black and white like that. All music has emotion. When most people think of emo they think of the whiney little bands with sad pretty songs. but i don't think it necessarily has to be that narrow. "Oh so you're saying a band like AFI can be emo?" Basically, even though a band as hard and screechy as AFI could be the last thing you think of when you hear EMO, AFI isn't lacking in emotion, therefore, they could be seen that way.

Know what i mean? It's a wide spectrum and pinning down one thing to define that classification is...you're setting yourself up. or maybe i'm setting myself up.
020418

good people i could consider myself punk (or A punk) but i dont dress punk or listen to punk. i am pretty hardcore, and smoke a lot of pot. thats why i believe that punk is a mentality, nothing more. and i think people should stop giving a shit about what other people think is "punk". if you were punk you wouldnt care. fuck punk. 020418

Throwback I'm actually writing a definition paper on what "punk" really is for an englishcomp class right now. Oh, while on the topic, anyone know a place where i could get good quotes on what punk is? Atleast two references are required for the paper.

Anyways, what was I gonna say... Oh yeah. It seems to me that most "punks" i meet aren't really "punk" at all. They're in such a hurry to get self-righteous, define everyone around them, and scream "sellout"... they defeat their own supposed ideals. Screaming "sellout" and acting self-righteous is the least punk attitude available, man. It seems that most punks i run into nowadays are only punks because they couldn't make the football team and all the pretty girls ignore them ^_^

Mallory punk is cool. whether it be music a mindset a fashion statment. But its also bull. Each one of us is a posuer. Everyone cares what others think. its in our nature. sure some people are more uninhibited but its all the same. I mean disliking bands that hit mainstream. thats so stupid! I mean disliking something because its trendy is just as bad as if that was the only reason you liked it. we are all shaped by our environment. we are all molded. none of us are free from rules, society, the norm. "punks" just do the opposite from the norm and pretend they are fighters, revolutionarys. They're posuers just like everyone else. i think everyone just needs to focus on why they are punk, or prep or jock. and then strip themselves of titles. Just be you. If you truly are your self you wont fit in a category. Everyone is a beautiful and unique snowflake. 021001
...
silentbob if everyone is a poser just like everyone else... then thats not posing is it? what about people who don't try to classify themselves, and just like what they think is good and don't care what other peoples opinion of their favorite bands are, it doesn't change their appreciation for it. is that posing? 021002
...
Mallory What i mean is that no one is free from caring about the opinions of others. And whether you would like to admit or not it shapes you. You just cant help it. And i know everyone likes to say "i dont care, i like my favorite bands, whatever." and maybe you are true your music, i pretty much am, but other peoples opinions do afeect in some ways. silentbob you're right, in one way or another someones opinions do affect you somehow in some cases. maybe not in music in every case. i mean, as long as you are hearing someone else's opinion of whatever band you listen to, it is going to affect you, because people are affected by everything even if it is the most miniscule unnoticable way. but in some cases, people don't mention what bands they like, and so it never gets brought up, so if no one ever says, "I hate this band" but they actually do, then you wont be affected by their opinion. 021003

micky jo I don't understand how something I love so much is something I also hate to say because it sounds so corrupt

Punk is this. Plain and simple. Think about and you will agree. If you don't, you will in a few years I promise.

Punk is an age you hit, where everything seems like bullshit. Then you find something pure, Punk. A show, a CD, a book. Something triggers you into a scene and you feel reborn. Then you see people abusing your new religion. Infidels in eighty dollar plaid pants that come with safety pins and listening to pop bands that play fast. You go thru a phase of being elite. This lasts until you realize "We were all posers once." You accept those trying to find their place, and ignore the ones who are trying to be trendy. One day though you realize those you thought were pure, have alliterative motives. You distrust now, and learn to think on your own COMPLETELY. Even the coolest punks are often dicks.
Finally, if you are lucky and honest, you find yourself, and the scene you once loved so much is still there, but you know it's a meeting place for like minds. Not euphoria. Then you know real punk and real life, and you are at peace.

Tell me I am wrong...

jenny enny dots maybe i should have posted on punk_music. i mostly enjoy pop-like punk maybe because i'm a girl and it's more cheerful. but you have to admit that it still rocks and it's fast enough that if it were a car, you'd certainly get pulled over. i am a fan of ramones, greenday, soup dragons (they did have a punk sound back then). i occasionally like harder stuff like black flag, gbh, and circle jerks. 040201

Preps will die and punks will take over MUHAHAHA PREPS ARE FUCKING STUPID!!! Really!!! They are!!! COME ON PUNKS AND GOTHS EVERY WHERE .. But that's total bull shit, man!! GRR!!! It gets me pissed off when ever people tell me who I should be!!! but ofcourse i come from a school that has all the preppy people there :/ that sux hey? well i guess i better go now... lata 040218

yes me. notice how a new word has entered recently? "PREPPIES" another word that means nothing. Try to look behind it and you'll find shadows of ideas, just like punk, and "poser". Once you slap that cover on something pure nobody can look behind it again. Now they take it and rape it. Shape it in their minds until it was meaningless. But that doesn't mean the idea is dead. You can't bottle the feeling, the idea. "Punk" or whatever it is, will not be dead, because beauty never dies.

later.

Ryan Worden This has been stupid... were not all the same... different punks like different bands and different fashions, were not all the same... we are totally different from one another. Like you said, punk is all about individuality and that is what we are practicing. My life is driven every day by the way people come up to me and call me a freak and all that... I have to prove to them that I will be who I am and what they say wont effect me in the least. We are all individuals... everyone... so whoever started this and said that punks are all the same was totally wrong... we strive to be different... what are you??? Everyone else all looks the same to me, maybe instead of punks changing their image, maybe you all should change yours. Maybe someday we will be able to call you a freak. 040310

Lint Lover Being punk is like an orgasm.
Everyone's version is different.
If you have to ask what it is-you're not one and you're not getting or giving one either.
If you go out of your way to announce that you are one(punk)then you aren't or if a woman goes out of her way to announce that she had one(O)then you know for sure that she didn't.

shoccolo wow.

revisiting this, i see many of you all have very strong ideas of what punk is.

i'm no guru on punk but, by growing up in the time when it really made itself known as a culture, i can only surmise that punk is all that isn't expected, tolerated, nor approved by 'society' [and what the hell issocietynow, anyway?] - a total contradiction to today's 'let's sell our individuality' attitude...

punk is the anti-society. it always has been. what i find disturbing is that 'punk' has become a trademark of the trendy; a brand statement of the angst-peddlers, looking to profit from an imminent rebellion, which we'd better face soon, before my patience runs out.

when something is popular, it loses its lustre. kind of like Johnny Rotten's return to the stage.

where was the punk?!

that was NOT the guy who claimed allegiance to nothing. he's now the guy he told us to hate. [if you saw that shameful begging for audience approval, you'd be shaking your head in disgust as well, i assure you.]

punk-schmunk. the radio dials 'alternative' on it's roulette wheel of today’s hottest music, and we all celebrate crap for the sake of being told its 'original'.

when i was a kid, i figured my parents were idiots, who knew shit about shit. honestly though, i've learned you need to understand the references left behind, from past generations, before you can decide their intentions.

if you're striving to be different, because so many other have found success in it, you're not really that different from so many who constantly fail at being happy.

fritz It was still winter, and Perdona was playing at the first hardcore show of the season. It was freezing outside. We stood in the doorway, keeping warm and watching from a distance. Our jackets were already threadbare, they didn't need to be torn. I could feel the metal studs down my shoulders and the bondage rings sewn into the sleeves. I wished that I smoked so I could have a cigarette to keep warm.

Zach and Ben were there, Brian wasn't. Bubba the skinhead showed up. He was always late. I think he was too cool to show up on time. He always had a cigarette in one hand and a baseball bat in the other. He's always break the bat, but never his smoke, and he'd end up puking blood after the show.

The set was almost over, and Nancy jumped off stage into the pit. She was the most hardcore kid I knew, and never tried to be. I think she was the reason girls hated other girls. She was tough as nails, could scream like nobody's business, and she was so pretty.

We were all tired, some a little high and some a little tipsy. It wasn't worth hanging around for the rest of the show, since all the rest of the bands sounded the same. We drove to Sonic, and drag-raced station wagons over the causeway. We sat outside instead of in cars, the whole gang of us. Skinheads, punk kids, and misfits. Mohawks, bondage jackets, ripped up clothes, bleeding noses, battle scars, playing acoustic guitars, drumming on tables. The waitresses looked relieved that we had to order from outside and scared to come out to serve us.

But we were all good kids. Really. We tried in school, and got good grades, and helped clean up garbage by the side of the road. Some of us smoked, but not all the time, and we only drank when we had something horrible to forget. We let other kids live with us, homeless or ones with really bad families, or found them somewhere, and gave them money for food and clothes and everything. Me and Zach taught this one girl, called herself Kizzy, how to play bass, so she could be in a band. And we all helped to put together a zine every so often, and wrote about everything and drew comics and took pictures and gave it to everyone.

We got an order of everything, and shared all of it. Whoever wanted a bite of something could have it. It sounds dangerous now, getting sick with who knows what. I don’t know if we just didn’t think of it or we just didn’t care. I guess we trusted each other.

There aren’t really shows anymore. The scene started dying and it’s almost disappeared. Zach moved away, Ben went to college, everyone else got the hell out of here. I don’t know what happened to us all. I haven’t seen Nancy or Bubba or any of the kids I was so close to for a long time. I can’t stand looking back on the years we had so much fun.

I’m not eighteen yet. But I’m getting the hell out of here.

Todd Punk is a way of life.
Punk went down-hill when it got sub groups. There are right wing punkers like me.
051006
...
zeke "punk" went downhill when it was issued a costume, a uniform if you will. it is an attitude. like existentialism, punk suffers from definition. ultimately it is akin to nihilism. in my humble opinion, if you say you are, you ain't; you are something else.

kids in costumes. aging rockers. sad poseurs.

and the quiet (or loud) avant garde who can do nothing other than move the edge of culture. you know them when you become aware of them. they are the other. for me, that is the essence of punk.

the center is rotten, fetid in it's own decay. let it wear it's costume and it's stage makeup. it is irrelevant.

as to cultural leanings, i find it difficult to separate the idea of autonomous identity, true social anarchy if you will, from the individualism implied by the aesthetic tendencies of "punk". "right wing punk" sounds oxymoronic to me. but that's just me.

reue here we are again.
give it another go?
what is it that draws us together?
maybe its lust, maybe we're just looking for something in each other.
something we've lost and are struggling to find again.
weeekend visits, blanketed by excitement, we hold each other and stay up all night.
we have the stupidest conversations and they're funny, enjoyable - just sigh and go to sleep.
here we are again.
i'm tired and stressed, the long days are showing on my face.
i'm sleeping correctly and trying to straighten up my life.
i'm not bounding for joy and you think i'm depressed.
wth!? i CAN'T get depressed!
but still you get down, you fall into that addicting habit of being upset.
is it my fault?
you don't want me touching you, and what do i do now?
just leave? you'll be ever worse.
stay? you'll fucking resent me more for it.
a break apart... great idea, i find it amusing that we need one so soon.
"If you want to try to make this work, you can't be unhappy."
Right. I'm NOT unhappy, at least i wasn't. if i was unhappy i wouldn't have come over.
if anything, i can't keep YOU happy.
fuck.
what keeps drawing us together?
loneliness? it seems more and more like this.
i thought you had changed so much, but it seems like i was wrong.
people don't change, last night was an instant reply of 3 years ago. hell, its even the same damned month.
its said that history has a way of repeating itself: yea, maybe it does... or maybe we're both too damned stubborn to admit fault. too expectant of eachother to be 'the best thing'.
i know why we keep seeing eachother. when we're alone, we want anything. when we have something or someone fulfill that role, we're ecstatic.
once we're in a relationship, we expect something more... and we're both wrong.
i can't give you want you want, and you'll never be content with what i can give you.
here we are again.
in for another ride.
i hope you get what you want.
i hope you the best, and i hope that is with me.

z i need to look up those entries in THE PUNK IDEOLOGY. i lost my copy, can i borrow yours?

seriously, alienation and individuality and the rejection of labels, the norm and the status quo are aspects of what i might include IF i tried to define punk. those and the ones you listed above can be applied to many social definitions. likewise is a inclination towards a post-modern aesthetic, simplicity bordering on crudeness and the rejection of the overtly decorative can be included. but these are merely symptoms of the larger disease, not qualifying characteristics. when i say: if you say you are you probably are not is a rhetorical conceit, not a principle. still, it might be true.

XxTeenagexDirtbagxX 1) To any one who is reading this to become "punk" you're a poser / will be.
2) To any one claiming punk is your way of life. You're a poser just as well..
Why?
There is no such thing as punk. It's just a word, a stereotype, a label. A label people put on other human beings.
-I look up these kinds of threads, just for fun. For a good laugh.
If there was a defintion for it, it would be something like :
*Not caring what any one thinks of you. Not caring who's listening. Not caring who's watching. Not caring who's caring.
*Being yourself, standing up for what you believe in.
..
It's not how you dress, what you listen to for music, not who you hang out with, and not what you do on your weekends.
It's just being yourself, all the time.

Xx-AnarchyKisses-xX Punk isn't just an image, it's a state of mind. Wearing rips and safety pins doesn't make you punk, and owning a sex pistols album doesn't help much either. It's about what you stand for and the constant belief that you can and will do something about it. Punk bands just sing about it - and they rock!!! Wooo!!! I'm only 14 and I am absolutley 100% into punk music but I don't call myself a punk! I was unfortunatley born a little too late! :P But punks rocks because they don't care what people think about them, coz they're doing their own thing that they feel is right, and that's what it's all about. AnarchyKisses xX 060620

tasha What is Punk? Punk isn't just about the music or just about the way you dress. Punk is a lifestyle. One in which you couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about you. You are who you are and nothing can change that, no matter how hard anyone tries. I'm fed up of people saying that bands aren't punk anymore because they've became successful. Take Green Day, for instance, once they were a small band who played to a few people in friends houses and basements. Now they've became big, all those 'friends' supposedly 'punk' have turned their backs on them, saying that green day aren't punk anymore, they're too popular. (and if you are punk and think that about Green Day, I don't particularly think you deserve to be Punk you obviously don't know the first thing about punk). They are exactly the same people as they were 16 years ago. The only difference is that their talent has been recognised. To me Green Day are as punk as anybody could possible get. They may not dress as extreme as others or their music may not be as hard as some may wish, but just think about it, punk is who you are and sticking to your beliefs. Punk is being different, a minority, one who doesn't follow they crowds silently, but expresses their differences and are proud of it. So if anyone ever questions punk again, or thinks 'all my friends have turned punk, i think i should too' go get yourself a life, and sort it out, you're not punk you're just trying to follow the crowds again, you're a fake, a prosthetic head, a plastic barbie doll... 060723
