What's most funny to me is hearing pastey white people from suburbia sing about morbid topics like death and loneliness, and then hearing Dylan sing one word of a song, doesn't matter if it's blues song or a love song, that contains more smoke, more liquor, more pain and more soul than everything they've ever said put together. Most people, you can distill all the real hurt they've ever felt down to an oily drop, put it in a glass of water and not taste the difference. Of course, I include myself in this group, but that's not the point. The point is that we live in an age where we wish he hurt more, just for the aesthetics of it. That's funny.

what I thought I was when I was 19 and listened to the Lemonheads and wore Doc Martens. (Okay, Doc Wal-Marts) Looking back, though, I ask myself, "What was that an alternative to?? You were exactly like everyone else, you silly girl!"

Choose a toothbrush, choose big screen TV, choose matching luggage, choose leisure wear, choose designer underwear, choose a family, choose life! Well I chose not to choose life, I chose something else... The reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

if i want smoke liquor and pain, it certainly ain't gonna be from Dylan. 'cept maybe dylan thomas. woody guthrie leadbelly billie miles johnny cash john lee hooker muddy waters but for some reason, not bob. because really, wasn't he just another disaffected suburbanite with a knack for lyrics?

this is important, I think I will just type that, this is important, and not really explain myself, just know that it is in fact important without me telling you the number of reasons why, or even why I need to say it is important, since it seems utterly useless for me to do such a thing other than to describe a single word as being important, but trust me this one is important

alternative, there is always another alternative. To do your best you have to find the best alternatives for yourself. I cannot say if listening to alternative rock will help you, or even playing chess. But that is the whole point of an alternative, there is always a better way of doing things.

For example, instead of looking on the internet for time zones, you could look on a globe and understand how the sun rotates and that is a better way of looking at things, than silly numbers.

white wave misses the 80s

Yes, KMFDM does rock. And it isn't alternative. Or is it? When I first heard the expression alternative rock, i felt like i had a new choice. something original. maybe something many people hadn't heard before. and something that would probably not make the Top 40 list. But lately, i find a very small percentage of alternative music to provide a fresh option. it is mostly filled with new artists that are only alternative because they might have a few successful albums, and then people don't remember them, after they die out. alternative sounds more intriguing than it is, with fancy band names, bizarre CD titles, and weird lyrics. alternative encourages more people to join them because of their coolness. the more that join, the less alternative they become. this is just my opinion, so pardon me if there are some fans of alternative out there. music is art that people connect to individually. i just feel like alternative is a huge pile that i have sort through just to get to a few treasures at the bottom. just my opinion, of course......

The CD's I bought recently include Chinese folk music, Indian folk music, Belle_and_Sebastian, Everything_but_the_Girl, and even odder music. I'm not sure I have a musical taste anymore.

MN_Chris, you have excellent taste. I have purchased Indian, Irish, and Russian music lately. If I find a rare alternative song that I like, I download it from Kazaa. Because it's the only good song on the whole CD, and not worth spending my money on. Chinese folk music sounds interesting. What is the title of the CD?

I forgot to mention James Brown and Squirrel Nut Zippers. Um, I forgot the title of the Chinese album. It says it's folk music from Southeast China. Now I'm listening to Liz Phair's first album, she's so yummy.

MN : I love your musical taste! The Zippers, a fun band, that brought swing to the pop/alternative world. mid 90's when alternative was just that. But i haven't heard much but "Hell". Liz Phair, has a new song that i wasn't impressed with. But she rocked back then with that mid 90's flavor. I was thinking recently about exploring her first album. I bet you'd make a great blather_mix_tape.
