yes and I'm also suprised how ironic the word is, at least how it is misused, and mispronounced. Rhetoric, the study of language.

rhetoric is more than the study of language, it's studying and using the skills of persuasion in language. if something is rhetorical, it is designed for showy effect. a rhetorical question is one that implies the answer in the question. straight out of the dictionary, no rhetoric, just denotative definitions. how does this mean that the previous should be taken back?

I know, it's a totally insane language. I realise that calling it insane implies sentience, but I really wouldn't be surprised if it fits the definition. It evolves and changes, throughout time and space, origins lost in the nether. You can warp words, warp sentences, misunderstandings abound, hence the need for silly things like smilies, or at the very least a differentiation in the tone of ones voice, if one happens to be speaking the language (I'd prefer to write it personally). Imagine if everone was only capable of speaking monatonically. We'd never understand a thing. It would be equivalent to every person walking around inside a cone of silence, or a trapezoidal-cylindric frosty boy cone (mutter mutter westy :P I am always in admiration of anyone who can master and organise the insane.

what was previously written in rhetoric, "who let the dogs out" and that silly nonsense, should be taken back.

I didn't under stand what they were saying...rhetorically speaking splinken rocks??? What does rhetorical mean in this sentence, I have no idea. And is who let the dogs out? rhetorical? or just irritating? (note the implied selection of answers) I think alot of what was once rhetorical is now just common sentence structure. Rhetorical is designed speech, used to simplify and provide false realism to political audiences. It is usually necessary to sound like an egghead. Like a scientist speeking about atoms using language that is used to deal solely with what he is studying. Rhetorical questioning comes from political debates, in which their are words with sacred meanings, to the polititions.
