Danny: Emo is one of the most beautiful musical crafts out there. the real emotional music. Evan: It's like someone just took a truckload of shit and just dumped it on my head. i hate listening to it, it reminds me of my problems.

Emotion is dead? I believe that was the Juliana theory... Emo rules, anyone who has ever experienced true emo knows what I'm talking about, not that pop shit but the stuff thats dark and black that you cannot stop listening to because you know that whoever is singing it is just like you and you love it because it loves you like an orphan in the world that you are born in.

i was reading a magazine the other day. it was the metro times, out of detroit. in the personals section, there was an ad that read "indie/emo girl 18, seeks emo boy 18-23". has a subgenre of music become a culture? can't i just listen to music without worrying what category it falls into?

It's funny, but I used to think that my music was my own personal yardstickfor measuring my own worth. Now I'm beginning to see that I, just like every other ass who looks down his nose at the kid in the ICP shirt, am no better than those I look down upon. I merely found a style of music that fits my taste, and for some odd reason, I felt that this justified me as a person. Granted, emo carries a comparatively large amount of depth and technical guitar lines, especially when compared with shock pop and boy bands. But who am I to say that style of music is sub-standard for it's fans. It would be like the man who looks over at the guy next to him in McDonalds and calls him a pussy for eating a cheeseburger instead of a big mac. I guess it's all a matter of what you crave. So there's my soapbox- that and the juliana theory sucks, Josh. Sorry, it had to be said by someone. Brett Detar (the little ex-Zao fuck) has a rockstar complex from hell, and I hope he lays the wrong groupie and gets crabs.

jeepers creepers, i didn't think this would get so big. i hate it when cool kids listen to emo, arn't these the same kids that used to make fun of me(probably still do!) i heard saves the day playing in abercrombi and fitch when i was walking past it to get to the movie theater. that the quientesence(sp?) of irony, a song from an album called "through being cool" being played in abercrombie and fitch.

okay, I'm kinda pissed. I JUST found out today that there's this place here in Austin called Emo's. awesome bands apparently go play there all the time and I knew nothing about it. the only way I found out about it was from my friend who goes to school in fucking Virginia! he knew about this place and I didn't. and, according to him, jets to brazil is supposedly playing there this weekend. he knew about it before I did. not like it makes any difference because all my friends here are, as he said, gaymos, who don't appreciate that kinda music. my friends suck. anybody wanna come to Austin to go to Emo's with me? I don't wanna go by myself, that would just be depressing.

I was at the Skate and Surf Fest at Asbury Park recently. A few things caught my attention. First, and I know this will sound like faux jaded whining, the punk scene has become increasingly commercialized by pop-punk and emo. There was an entire floor just dedicated to merchandise; I know these bands have got to eat, but I remember a time when you could go to a punk show for 5 bucks, stay there for 8 hours or more, and bands maybe sold a t-shirt and their CD. The bands would even stick around to watch the other bands, and you could talk with them after the show and hang out with them for a while. What bugs me is that this was the way things were as recently as two years ago... but not any more. That brings me to the next thing I noticed: these emo and pop-punk bands are VERY full of themselves. At the Asbury Park show, do you know how many bands were hanging out with the fans? Maybe three out of the twenty bands there. One band that was particularly good to the fans was GlassJAw, who are neither pop-punk nor emo, also they were probably the only heavy band on the bill. The singer, Daryl Palumbo, was hanging out with the fans during and after the show, not just signing autographs but actually having conversations with fans. Another thing I noticed is that the fan base has changed, something I feel is due largely to the new popularity of bands like A New Found Glory and Saves the Day. Instead of the dedicated punk fans who go to every show around them and get the name of there favorite local band tattooed across their asses, the new fans are largely younger teenagers, usually around 14 years old, who go to shows just to by pins for their backpack and to see the local flavor of the week emo band. We've actually reached a point in our culture where punk is "trendy." I ask you people, is that not the antithesis of punk? Isn't punk supposed to be counter-culture? Now MTV, the epicenter of "trend" culturehas found its way onto the scene, giving airtime to bands like A New Found Glory and causing many a frightened fan whisper "sell-out" through the crowd. If you're into emo because you like the music I'm fine with that. Personally, I find it a confining genre as most of the songs are pertaining to failed romance; I think there is more to life than that. But if you are a genuine fan of emo, I am ok with that as long as you remain true to your bands and are not in the scene because of some trend. I hate to bring up such an archaic term as "poseur" but I find it fitting in such a case. Listen to what you like, and do not think what everyone else is thinking. Just because everyone suddenly likes Big D and the Kids Table doesn't mean you should necessarily. Listen to what you love. Don't get swept up in punk "fashion." If you do, you and all other pop-punk emo teenage consumers will choke on your leopard print work shirts, fake metal studs, and collected band pins until your faces turn as green as the money you payed to cheapen the entire vision of pure punk rock.
