Dafremen New entry: Kingsuperspecial His 'my name is Dafremen' piece on Daf_index has bumped him up high on my list. That may sound silly, but you have to realize that for me, anyone that goes to such lengths to touch, depress, amuse or infuriate their audience is an entertainer at heart, as well as in action. Yes, some of his stuff can get downright corrosive, but isn't that one of the tests of an artist? His ability to redefine the limits of his own expression and by so doing, perhaps evoke a reaction in his audience? Andy Kaufman taught us this lesson well, that there is no REAL, here on the stage..it is only as real as it gets in our minds and those of the audience, that is all. I've always enjoyed his "you stink" antics, even (no make that especially) when I am the target, because I am NOT an easy target to go after, and so the skill required to even ATTEMPT to draw me in, or "push my buttons" is great. Imagine a man reading a book. Sure, you can get him into YOUR characters, but how do you make him SINCERELY and HONESTLY believe that what you say matters to HIM, the reader? It's much easier to get him to care about what the characters are saying about and doing to each other than it is to get him to care about what you say about HIM. (In a work of fiction, that is.) I tend to read blather in much that way. Although I cannot be easily reached, KSS has made some EXCELLENT attempts along the way and in each case, I have acknowledged his prowess as an entertainer. What became even MORE fascinating to me, was whether or not the entertainer could be drawn more completely into his role, whether by creating a reaction where there was none, the artist could become the audience, whether the character in the book could be affected by his reader-become-character as well. (I have to admit that this was motivated a BIT by boredom over telling him how much I was enjoying the show...a desire to be a part of that show, if you will.) It seemed that I had succeeded, but then again, THAT is another of KSS's unique geniuses, his ability to play the part of the indignant detractor, the pissed off critic, with such realism and finesse. One can never know if it's real, or an act. IF one is smart, one doesn't care, one simply let's it be what it is, avoids personally involving one's self and enjoys the show. There will be some of you who disagree that SHOCK art and ACIDIC expression are worthy of praise and I can respect that. Yes, it IS MUCH easier to shock and anger than it is to evoke other, more refined emotions. Andy Warhol might have asked if the simplicity of the approach lessens the value of the expression. To that I would have to answer, yes and no. Yes, because as time wears on, the audience becomes (as many of us have) acclimated to the approach (be it pop or shock) and the artist's previous works lose much of their impact. However, on the other hand, it subsequently becomes more and more a matter of the artist's individual creativity as to whether or not he will be able to evoke the responses of old, from his post-evolutionary audience. I think that KSS has made many excellent attempts at pursuing his goal of touching the audience. I also believe that even when his work is motivated by sincere desire to be abrasive, it is then on the audience, you and I, to either take it to heart, or take it as art. I choose the latter and so can't help but be amused and surprised by the lengths to which this man will go, by the thoughts which must run through his mind on a daily basis.
