vegan
? Call me ignorant, but what is a vegan? 010413
...
johnny west A vegetarian. That's the only definition I'm aware of. 010413
...
Zoe it's a person who doesn't eat meat, cheese, or any dairy product at all. that's no eggs, milk, yogurt, icecream, etc. 010413
...
CheapVodka Close but no entire cigar.

I'm a vegan. It is like a vegetarian only we don't believe in the ingesting of any animal products what-so-ever. While vegetarians avoid flesh, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, wool, leather, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals.

It's a life style that I do enjoy. Healthy for us as well as the environment and every living thing we share it with.

"bunnyboy" dont poison your body. you were only given one. go vegan. 011204
...
Carcharodon carcharias people who go vegan are fine,
i've been doing my best not to be vegan but i am reducing the amount of meat i eat (so far i've vastly cut my red meat intake, but i think it would be difficult at best to lay off the poultry and seafood)

but for fucksakes i saw vegan dog food the other day and i'm sorry, but as omnivorous as dogs and their ancestor/cousins the wolves might be, THEY AREN'T VEGANS! they are predator/scavengers by nature (hence the occasional garbage can overturned in your kitchen...instinct)

forcing an adopted human trait on an animal against its nature is no better than serving another animal up on a plate (if you believe that it is wrong)

meat cutting teeth are called CANINEs for a reason, people.
011204
...
"bunnyboy" i don't have a dog, i'm allergic. i have a cat and i feed it meat. just because i'm vegan, doesn't mean my animal friends are. you should try some of that vegan dog food though, i've never seen it, sounds...interesting. 011204

jestification vegan pets?

because if we don't wear leather or eat meat then why would we want pets? (who serve as subordinates)....unless we adopted them....
but that's still supporting a system that exists through explotation & oppressiobn...

and why would we feed these pets food containing 'left over' meat products from some grossly violent factory perfecting butchering methods? (perfection = fastest & most profitable)

......*@iF i wAs vegAn@*.....
why not go all the way.....
011205
...
carcharodon carcharias (and chips) because the first domestic dogs were scavenger wolves who lost their fear of our primitive ancestors.

all dogs are descended from wolves, the breeds we know were selectively bred for each of their optimal traits (though some were apparetly seem to have bred as some sort of cruel joke...chihuahuas, poodles, pomeranians, lhasa apsos and all other "rat dogs")

you never hear about soya hounds although bloodhounds are a reality

but like i said in the beginning, i can understand why humans might go that route, evolution is slowly relieveing us of the need for such large quantities of meat protein as our acncestors once thrived on and our bodies will mostly support a VOLUNTARY transition now, but the thought of someone for no other reason than ideology trying to alter the eating habits of an animal who is primarily a natural carnivore....laughable.

as much ignorance in the face of nature as the people who bulldoze rainforests for mcdonalds beef supplies

seriously, vegan dog food?
what's next, tofu mice for constrictors?
veggie burger antelopes for lions?
soy protein seals for orcas and sharks?

heheh.
011205
...
carcharodon carcharias (with tartar sauce) also, i was tempted to try the vegan dog food myself, actually, god knows when i was high i ate the real thing on more than one occasion.

and if you ever get the chance to try some vegetarian foie gras, i highly recommend it. good stuff. even from a predator's point of view
011205
...
jestification constrictors, lions, sharks, antelopes? yeah, millions of people have them in their yards so there would be a market for.................ahem.

my point was that back in the day when dogs were domesticated, the society was not at 1 million miles per, hour post-industrialized, CONSUME! CONSUME! level. so the means of getting meat was, um, natural (for lack of a better word).....the "meat" in dog food today...is some fucked up shit. ol' roy is supporting the same system as mcdonalds.....and some people find the devil in mcdonalds, in order to be consistent, they should see the devil in ol' roy too.

maybe "organic" dog food would be a better option rather than "vegan" dog food....

rusty wolves (and dogs) are naturally omnivorous. in the wild, they will eat bark, berries, etc. in addition to meat, and generally don't eat meat every single day either like most of america does. also, most dog food you buy at the store is at least 90% grain filler anyways, so this vegan dog food thing doesn't seem so strange. unlike cats (which need the taurine from meat, although we can produce it synthetically now as well), dogs have no inherent nutrient requirements that require them to eat meat 011230
...
cajun blackened filet of carcharodon carcharias true enough, i thought i had acceded the point of dogs being omnivorous already, but my original point was the issue of trying to impose human quirks on our pets

omnivorous to be sure, but given a readily available supply of prey and carrion the average canine will indulge

for instance;
the 3 black labs i grew up with were natural hunters, two of them were quite adept at snatching low flying birds out of the air and the third had an appetite for gophers and field mice even though they were well-fed by us

i think they did it as much for the fun as for the taste

kinda like me with swimmers in florida

drunken So, what do you have to complain about this? I feed my dog vegan dog food, but I also give her meat from the food bank that is just going to be discarded. I'm poor enough that i get food from the food bank anyway. There are TONS of gov't surplus animal products that just become discarded. I would not buy meat, but this is just going to go into the trash, so why not give it to her? I will not feed her bought meat, as an ethical choice, but I will also not stop her from killing and eating squirrels outside. 020113

dundun no, i am not totally making the dog vegan. i think it is self defeating to call oneself vegan and then completely limit the free will of another creature. but, i also don't think vegan dog food is absurd, whoever said that on here. i am glad it exists, since i won't buy my dog anything else. and, i think people made very good points about most dog food being 90% grain anyhow. my dog loves veggies and carbohydrates and gets as excited about them as meat. she has also never refused her vegan dog food, but i have seen her spit out chicken. 020123
...
----- oh yeah , i got her some vegan dog treats the other day, but i ate them all. they tasted like i remember combos tasting. real fucking good. "primarily a carnivore", thats an omnivore. of course it is inherently oppressive to have animals as "pets". however, giving the animals i have adopted as much happiness as posssible, which to me means NOT oppressing any other for fucking food, is the best i can do right now. untill we are all dead. 020123
...
j_blue not having read most of this i would say i am vegan because to be the most harmless as possible is a good thing

if you can live without killing, or exploiting, than why not?

we dont allow our dogs to kill, or most of us dont at least; and if they can live without harming, than why not?

when i keep pets, its to save them from the lives of subordination and trauma and sheer lack of respect they might otherwise recieve

it is wrong to subordinate/mistreat/disrespect an individual of lesser intelligence

while it is impossible to live up to most idealism, its good to keep trying, and to be practical about it

"Ancient Pagan" Hey, Carcharodon Carcharias With Tartar Sauce In Vegas With Creme Brulet & A Sweet Cherry Ontop, hey you man!

I am a vegan! I suffered chronic constipation & frequent illness as a child, then I switched to mainstream, junkie Vegetarianism. Constipation left and illness radically subsided. A few years back I switched to vegan and illness and overweight left! I was clinically obese and lost fifty pounds in eight months! My vegan diet is 90% raw foods baby! Its called 'Raw Veganism' (see http://www.davidwolfe.com/ to cognize). My thyroid was almost dead ("Hashimoto's Disease") and is now recovering--to my doctor's surprise! Any Vegan, Vegetarian or fleshly diet is unhealthy if not planned rationally! But dogs being Vegan? David Wolfe's friend's dog is 90% vegan most of the time and is perfectly healthy...but it does need some raw meat on occaison. Cats being Vegan? Nevermind! You, my friend, know that fish ain't veggies but to ya'll out there: Fish Do Not Grow On Trees!

Hey, Carcharodon Carcharias with Creme Brulet, Mushroom Gravy & Bag O' Chips: take care of yourself! Bon Appetit!

sporkwielder there's nothing evil about meat, it's just muscle, bunched cells drained of higher purposes. Being in this universe means we need energy, from outside us. That's the way it be. andru235 it isn't really my business whether you eat meat or not, but...

our primate cousins almost never eat meat. when have you ever heard of a bonobo or an orangutan stalking down a giraffe? doesn't happen. if a gorilla comes across a decaying corpse, it...keeps walking.

it think it is gorillas (?) that use sticks to pull locusts from the locust mounds and they eat them.

can people eat meat? sure. can people eat locusts? sure. the latter has more of an evolutionary precedent, though.

do i like eating meat? yes, i love it. do i eat meat? nope. if it was 10,000 years ago, and the meat i ate was a deer i (we) hunted, that's one thing. eating a cow penned in a 10x10 stable, fed cow feed mixed with its feces and cement, injected with hormones, etc. = yuck. you are what you eat! so don't eat that meat!

personally, if a lion killed me and ate me, that's fine. i can think of worse ways to go. but if a lion trapped me into a 10x10 room, fed me foodstuffs mixed with my feces and cement, injected me with hormones, etc. = then i no longer support the lion's eating me. but lions don't do that.

some of the hardest temptations to resist are culinary temptations. but it is worth it if you love the species you plan to eat! (and yes, you can love the species you plan to eat: i think carrots are awesome and i eat them. and if the argument is that animals are sentient, i ask, can you prove that plants are not? brains aren't everything)

Pto Why do people like to razz vegans? I've been giving this a lot of thought, and at last I've figured it out. It is because they are hopelessly in love with vegans. They simply want to be around the vegan all the time, they want to please the vegan, they want to give the vegan all of their money... but they are too scared. Consequently, they become belligerent and hostile. But there is no need for such carnal animosity. They should simply adore the vegan, and compliment the vegan's natural scents. 061021

flowerock reading this blathe I realize how far "vegan" has come. or maybe I m just in the right states (ca, az...) when I was five my mom had us vegetarian, we went back and forth. I was often vegetarian and would take abrupt breaks because while I was not eating meat or a lot of dairy either, I was eating junk food, candy, breads, poor quality peanut butter(with crappy oils and sugar), not organic... I was unhealthy.

now pseudo_vegan as I eat fish and no othrr animal or animal product. I don't use a lot of "products" but none of it has animals in it and it s usually bronners or something comparable. I will wear and use leather, almost everything I have is second hand so ethically I feel good about that since i am not supporting directly "bad" conpanies.

there is so much more to the ethical side of this than "not eating animals" where do your veggies come from? I was shocked tonfind that some of my organic veggies came from China. all that fuel and time ad PACKAGING to transport my vegan organic foods... read labels. soy is bad too in my opinion. a lot of the veggie/vegan "foods" are pretty unhealthy, all carb and fat or soy. we need balance. if we hunted, fished, gathered, and grew our food it would be much better even than not killing at all because ll the packaging, refrigeration, transport, of the food and of the people moving and stocking and selling it... rough on the earth...

my dog eats mostly organic grain free dog food. pets are not very eco friendly either to be honest, but they exist and they are full of love, can t survive in this environment with us without our help.

flowerock pesegan? sounds anout right. some might still dislike that word/label, who knows, just words, the actions are more important. I might actually quit fish after watching a documentary on nuclear wast/run off and what it jas done and comtinues to do to people exposed and living in contaminated areas. I want a list of things that absorb and hold nuclear waste particles (I'm not very scientific here, this all my feeling not really 100% informed) and how it really works and effects humans and animals that eat the food, I think most of our land and air is more contaminated than is healthy, it may get better but it may get worse. Id like to know more. 140822

epitome of incomprehensibility I'm not, but I helped vegans very indirectly yesterday by asking for sherbet at the local ice-cream place. gelato usually has egg in it I think. or maybe i m confused...
