Anyway,..I think my welsh g.g.g.grandfolks were landowners (there is talk of a squire in the tree) they sold-up and left Wales for England around 1800 just as coal mining was taking off in Wales. the cotton industry was booming business in england's warehouses and my family became workers/weavers. my g.g.grandmother came to North America mid-1800's. She took her good china with her in the wagon all the way to California (gold rush days). i don't know what ever happened to her fine teacups and saucers but i do know they survived the journey and ended up in Canada along with her. i am told she had a beautiful voice, that she used to sing all the time, and this was attributed to her being welsh. she sang with her children and read shakespeare with them by the fireside. some of her granddaughters became opera singers. her son, my g.grandfather used to sing with his kids and passed this tradition on to his children, including my gramps. the earliest picture i have of my grandpa is from the 1930's when he is twenty-something, and in this picture he is playing a guitar. my grandmother (mixed danish-german-irish-scottish-welsh ancestry) is also musical and has musical kin,..and together they sang. their sons and daughter (my three uncles and my mom) can all sing and play guitar, and between the four of them they taught me some of my first songs on guitar, though i've mostly forgotten them now as i hardly ever play. so, yeah, what i'm getting to is that there seems to be a musical connection in my family which stretches (over two centuries and an ocean) back to Wales. my grandaunt died last year at the age of 100 and she used to say the welsh blood in the family was where we got our sense of mysticism.
