its hard to jump a cemetery gate when you haven't crossed the fuzzy line from still-drunk into hung-over. she and i walked the street lined with pink-houses and sidewalks that smelled like beer until we could talk about what had happened the night before.

well, I didn't get to see the game cuz I'm not home. I'm at school in Austin, so it wasn't on tv here. but I saw the score on espn2. we scored 25 points in the third quarter and were tied in the fourth until the last, like 2 minutes or so. then we made a field goal to win 34-31. saints kick ass.

Whelp...being my place of residence...born and raised... I have to say that I'm angry... If anyone could have seen that Saints game yesterday you woulda been all about killing someone from New York. Some guy says I'm not from New Orleans because I spent time on the West Bank. Whatever. I was born in New Orleans East and every night we can (if we're sober enough to drive and it's before 2 am) then we are at the Quarter. whatever dude. I have friends who live in the east and on the wank. there's nothing in either area. maybe even if you lived in lakeview or something, I'd be more understanding. sure, both the east and the wank are technically in orleans parish, but they still suck. sorry. I have to agree with you about the homicidal tendencies towards new york right now, though. fuck them all.

uptown. on st. charles between louisiana and napoleon. just outside the garden district. I do wish I had an accent, though. just not a yat one. I think I almost developed one over the summer working downtown. it slips out sometimes when I'm drunk or stoned. how embarrassing. but it's kinda funny.

unfortunately, some cliches and schmarmy lyrics just can't be ignored because i know what it means to miss new orleans i lived there for three years and loved it. i love you people for living there and loving it. what a great fucking city. even that god-awful smell, i miss that. what is that anyway? john mooney at madigans, the blacksmith shop, being insanely in the weeds (trees) at commander's, letting out a banshee wail each day i set foot on the infield at jazz fest, uglesich's, pissing off a gator along the boardwalk in jean laffites by thumping an empty water bottle, a gallon of milk punch a gallon of bloody's a bottle of veuve and leaving the remains in pirates alley, waking up in front of tip's on the neutral ground at 5am with everyone gone and no change to call a cab, getting locked out and going to the milan lounge and using some random key from someone at the bar and having it work, strangely pronounced street names, drive thru daquiris, go cups, kermit, a whole mess of people who lived mere footsteps away from my st louis childhood all playing jazz in n.o., that river, uptown, in search of the perfect sazerac, leaving igor's at 11am after far too many irish coffees, the perfect antidote to five years in helL.A., fooooooooood, and on and on and on and on and on and on. go, live, do--what an amazing place

she has been quiet lately the calm before the storm....well some would say finding myself referring to those times as "the good ol days" finding myself resenting that thought no more pirates in Pirate's Alley.......oh sweet John where have you gone? And why did the great lush's of New Orleans dissappear too? no more wench's dancing on the bar....those luscious ladies no more hidden embraces in The Dungeon....those smokey rooms no longer a comfort had to make room for the new breed of dark children.......of shining dancers......of jokers and thieves ah, yes the good ol quarter days are gone..... we have now secluded ourselves.....tucked away......hidden in the Garden District slinging drinks for those who will never understand the heart still thumps to the erratic pace...at times....wondering....tasting the thrill of yesterday's past making our own private decay...shadows ..whispers ..afterthoughts ..halfway forgotten no, we can never go back.....we must slide forward....with narrowed eyes tucked away...reaching out

it's gutter candy, grime and glitter and prettily filthy. drinking chartreuse and dixie beer in the quarter at 4am and falling asleep in jackson square. smashed sidewalks and dreams and sticky humid afternoons. rescuing stray mardi gras beads from ironwork months after the party is ended. winn-dixie by st. louis #1. sweat stained lace and yesterday's smeared eye-liner. cruising the ninth ward listening to ziggy stardust.

Alright I was born and still live in this fucking city...and most, if not all of u have it wrong.... 1. Some one spoke of cemeteries smelling like beer.......... no! the Quarter does, the cemeteries are a good 4 miles away....it was probably their breath! 2. The river is not green or warm... it is brown from all the "shit" that flows down it from up north to here, the crap eats away at our coast line ........algea won't even grow on it..so it is not green..it may be warm but in my 24 years and mothers 44 years neither of us will risk testing the temperature.... 3. Chartruse.. good luck finding the real thing.....the closeist u will get is reading a poopy z brite book... 4. No one here's soul has found fullfillment..... if that was true we would have more "famous" bands, artist and writers out of here... 5. No one is really happy here, if we were the mississippi would not flow with alcohol. And tourist would not come here to forget their fucking problems by drowniing them. 6. The Saints..... not a big sports fan but heay, they suck!..... not on purpose it is because the superdome was built on the oldest cemetery in the state. Back in the 50's our genius polititians said "heay, we need to build a sports dome....but where"...some other ass hole said "heay, there is this cemetery right in the heart of shit, lets move the bodies and build our stuff." So they did..and the dome is fucking haunted now, cursing the Saints... 7. Cheapvodka.... you do realize that the west bank is 5 - 10 minutes from down town New Orleans... 8. Something someone said about lakeveiw.... YUPPIES..... if that is what you consider this city.. you have either been sheltered or are a moron. 9. One of you said you wish you had our accent.... Uh,,Why? I was born here ..deal with tourist all day and they think I'm from the east coast.... there is no real nola accent... and the few laffite, grande isle people that have one..... u don't want.. 10. Back to #1 it only smells bad in the french Quarter... because the city was designed before there was such a thing as trash pick up..... so there are no allies..it all goes on the street... Well that's that..... When it's not 6am I will tell u what it is like to live here... it just took me forever to read all the crap everyone else wrote and clear it up....

requiem: you *can* find real chartreuse, darling, still the shit made by monks, you're thinking of absinthe, which i won't go into... there is a new_orleans accent, so to speak, but you mostly find it in the old folks and hicks... kinda like a mushymouthed frenchified southern kinda thing... it's odd... and the whole city does stink, it's madame mississippi's fault. thank you, please pull through. (and may the tribelings met and unmet down there fare well through the biblical flooding currently predicted. just head upstream if you need some shoulders to stand on.)

she could smell it on his lips, his past, the way he grew up near bourbon street & hated the tourists. she could hear the calls of the voodoo mamas on a full moon, howling like coyotes at the lunar harvest. she looked into his creole eyes and full lips, his childish giggle and the way he danced around the bedroom, and she could see new orleans in his essence. she longed to eat cajun food with him, to smell blackened catfish and smoky nights, to hear the blues drift up into the darkening sky.

driving along sacramento street, after a long day of drawing, after an evening run, sweaty, i glanced briefly down a cross street. the lining trees hung just so, and with the light from the sun just past setting, i was for a fraction of a fraction of a second back at the corner of tchoupitoulas and napoleon.

I just came back from vacationing from there. It was the most beautiful place. I got a vampire to walk me around downtown New Orleans at night, and we got to see some really cool stuff. I learned a lot about the folklore and history and stuff. Good times. Good times. The jazz on every corner was AMAZING. I wish I had brought my saxophone or my bass or my keyboard or a clarinet or something, but there was nowhere to fit it in the car.
