Maybe I'll Catch Fire, their second album, is packed with songs much more in the tradition of bands like the Replacements and Green Day (perhaps they're a smashing combo of the two!) than modern-day, lifeless pop-punk. Set aside the fact that you've heard a million albums made up of guitar-bass-drums-vocals, and take a second to remember that all your favorite records are made up of guitar-bass-drums-vocals. Obvious points of reference are bands like Jawbreaker and Smoking Popes (whose Mike Felumlee recently joined Alkaline Trio on drums) – bands whose love of the song was never overshadowed by blaring guitars. There are even a couple of semi-crooners on Maybe I'll Catch Fire, courtesy of bassist Dan Adriano, who sings on three of the album's ten songs. "You've Got So Far To Go" brings to mind Elvis Costello and (here's an obscure but apt comparison) late 80's British also-rans Bradford. It's a nice complement to singer Matt Skiba's more forceful material, especially the tuneful and blazing album-opener "Keep 'Em Coming." Maybe I'll Catch Fire succeeds where so many recent punk-influenced records fail for one basic reason that bands so often forget: it's got great songs.
