every person has been ignorant and idiotic at one time, but that doesn't make that person permanently ignorant nor permanently idiotic.
it just so happens that america likes to exploit its ignorance and idiocity more than other places.
or maybe you just live in america and don't pay attention to any other place and are unaware of their problems.

endless desire by the way...
ive had to learn the geography of the world

and ive had to memorize the countries in every continent in the world sometime or another if not many times.

i can draw europe, africa, the middle east, asia as a whole, and (of course) north america free hand.

ive never had to memorize south america. i suppose i should. senior year is when they focus on that the most.

the point is, i know about other countries. every history teacher ive ever had has stressed the importance of learning about other cultures, opening our minds to new ideas, putting an end to ethnocentrism (or as much as we humanly can)...so i dont know what it was like at your junior high/high school/junior college (that's all i can speak for) but not all americans are ignorant about other places. sure, i can only remember so much after long periods of time, but it intrigues me...i listen...i learn.

i am not an ignorant idiot. and if i am, then it has to count for something that i try.
040102
...
silentbob i don't know if the things i have to say will be helpful or harmful.

people say "ignorance" and they mean it in a bad way. and it was meant in a bad way here. if you are ignorant to something, it just means you don't know about it. Not that you don't want to know, or wont learn about it later. or believe that the world revolves around you. or believe that your country is the best.

that being said....

to say "60% of americans are against the war" is to suggest that the other 40% is "just ignorant," as if they just don't know whats going on, as if they are just uneducated about it. and that is the only reason they are pro-war. as if all we have to do is educate them, and 100% of us will be on the same side. As if everyone really does have the same opinion, and once they get the special information, they wont be ignorant anymore.

As if ignorance and annoying nationalism are the same thing.
We can tell people our opinions on the war and why its bad, but if they don't change their mind, they aren't ignorant for it. that isn't really the same thing.

but really, every one of us is ignorant about a lot of things, and im sure that the 60% of americans (keep in mind i am one of them) are ignorant about a lot of things that have to do with the war, and iraq, and many other cultures. We know nothing. Being against the war doesn't make you "not ignorant"
as if to say that 60% of americans just aren't ignorant. they're just completely educated and completely fine. as if "being against the war" means they just... aren't ignorant. they totally know whats going on with other cultures. and its just that 40% thats ruining it for the rest of the world.

but the truth is 100% of us is ignorant, in every country. no one knows anything.

nothing against cheetah, or anyone, but really...
there's a lot of ignorance in the world, and attributing it to entire schools of thought and beliefs, pretty much just blaming ignorance on other people isn't going to make it go away, or make ourselves any less ignorant.

there are people who are ignorant about some things and not other things. we just need to teach each other and learn from each other.

phil Didn't read any of that up there, just wanted to take a moment to say:

I am imagining a room
as it is described to me in a book
each piece of furniture
the entire body of the house
the neighborhood trees
every detail picnic table
is a snapshot
a picture taken a cut out
of a memory of a real place
a true event
only my darkest imaginings could create such things
but for each cut and paste job
these worlds open up
around these objects
their history revealed
leaping forth in my imagination
overlapping one another
this has always confused me.

What am I meant to see, when am I certain I am seeing the here and now, not a single object's memory? To see the whole picture, outside of these illusions.

He did not say it, I only heard it.

phil The world is only ignorant because you look at it that way. Look at this.

We are alive.

Chances are not good for this sort of thing to be happening.

Considering how much bigger everything is than everything else it is hard to believe we are not squished like bugs every day by some giant cosmic sneaker.
It is our insigifigance that let's us survive, and ignorance must also work in this fashion.
There is simply to much to know, impossible to understand.
there are no steps to prevent ignorance.

phil Oh btw I am an american and I am happy to say, in general, as a whole, we classify ourselves as being better than everyone else.
Why would we make a category we would fail in.
We have computers, the internet. We go in outerspace, we do have sick people, and we sometimes bomb the holy shit out of some places. Not that any one of us is doing it, or that we find it necessary to do it on the behalf of others, or several other million excuses for each individual.

I have never had any of these things happen to me.
1. been helped by a citizen of a foriegn country.
well you see my point.

We live over here, fuck off.

If you think for some unfound reason you would be better in our position, by all means grow antennas and go live in the ground. You'll at least survive the whole thing that is bound to happen becuase Europe is a bunch of suckling pigs with such odd historical views Which just happened to rub off on us ignorant europeans living in America. Oh, no, wait, you are complaining about the NATIVE americans. Well, the white people who could get off the overpopulated potato loving cess pool known as sweden, ireland, spain, ect. stabbed and shot and fucked them all do death. So ha ha. thunderbuck ram From a distictly foreign perspective its a nonsense to suggest America is a bunch of ignorant idiots; the implication being that such a phenomenon is greater there than in any other country.

The issue really is that America is such a highly populated country with the most advanced communications, the freedom to express oneself, and is without doubt the most powerful country and projected culture in the world right now. The simple fact is we see, hear and are made more aware of numerically superior American idiots.

Traditionally American education has focused on internal cohesion. This attitude has been bolstered by a high degree of self sufficiency in many areas and frequent bouts of isolationism. In such circumstances, ignorance of the wider world perhaps has been more prevalent. Many Americans simply have not had the need or seen a need to consider life outside their borders, unless forced to do so by their Government's actions, and then usually only from a limited military perspective. This has been changing fairly dramatically in the last 20 years or so beacuse of world events and the effective shrinking of the world through cheap mass communication developments and globalisation of industrial production.

It's too easy to overlook what America has given the world in positive terms of drive and invention and to focus instead on the all too evident negative aspects of corporatism and potential global hegemony. In my experience, America is such an incredibly complex and diverse place that somehow is held together by a strange sense of "oneness". And yet States (and even areas within States)and different parts of the country couldn't be less alike in terms of culture, outlook, comparitive wealth, education and opportunity.

Latent American idiocy needs to be kept in check by the rest of the world, because of its unique potential to cause devastating harm to us all through the projection of power, and the disproportionately negative effect that idiotic decisions of a few powerful but ignorant and potentially dangerous Americans can have. Equally, the rest of the world cannot afford to stifle the good intent and dynamism that flows from America, but need to emphasise the necessity of seeing the world as a wholly integrated but complex web of mutually inclusive interests.
040824
...
Elmo There is a certain point and logic to that one, but i think it's a rather sweeping, and extremely racist statement.
More accurate would be to say
"I think that the majority of americans are ignorant and stupid."
That would still be crossing the line somewhat, but at least it's not sweeping racism.
Got i hate bigots.
