k, guys we all think about it sometimes. What do you want yours to say? An epitaph on stone will some day cease to exist, but when blather is copied on to a universal format and millions of copies made and shot into space it will live forever on a thousand worlds. So make it count. "Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--" That's mine. What's yours?

Mine would have to be one of my favorite quotes from Shawshank_Redemption. "Some birds aren't meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice, But still, the place you live is that much more drab and empty that they're gone.

I want it to be something totally random and nonsensical like a goofy knock knock joke or a picture of George Forman. Or maybe both. You know, just to liven the scene up a little; because if you're walking around in a graveyard reading epitaphs, you've got to be feeling pretty melancholy. (I realize that just sticking a photo of George Forman on my gravestone is a wee bit tacky -- it would be more like an engraved picture. Something classy, ya know?)

I don't want to be buried in a graveyard. Once I'm dead I'll have no knowledge of however I'm buried of course, but thinking about it now I think I'd like to be buried in the mountains where we buried my dad, illegally and unknown. My epitaph would simply be the tracks of deer and mountain lions, and perhaps an oak would wrap it's roots around me.

From "Song of Myself" by Walt Whitman: "A child said What is the grass? fetching it to me with full hands; How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he... ...it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves... What do you think has become of the young and old men? And what do you think has become of the women and children? They are alive and well somewhere, The smallest sprout shows there really is no death, And if there was it led forward life, and does not wait at the end to arrest it, And ceas'd the moment life appear'd. All goes onward and outward, nothing collpases, And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier."

my epitaph has already been carved into the black granite. it's sitting in the cemetary even as i write. half of the stone guards an empty grave. the only item the stone lacks is my date of death. seeing my name and my image carved into that stone is fucking creepy. so is what is written on the stone. it's not me. it's not who i am. i'm afraid to go there. i have not visited the grave site in 2 years. the last time my friends tried to force me to go, i tried to jump out of the car. ::sigh:: anyway, just don't be hasty in deciding the words that you will be remembered by. i have seen mine, and nothing in this world scares me more, which is why i am now involved in the extremely expensive process of having the stone removed and another one laid. forgive me baby...

haha ogreous_poem I live life with a small footprint. Like a world-class Olympic diver I don't like to make a splash. So when I die, I hope that people will bury me cheaply. Maybe in a gunny sack, out in the woods. But really, I don't care about my remains after I die... whatever makes the survivors happy. Embalm it and sit it in a chair, if that's what they like.
