When's the last time you had coffee in a local family-run coffee shop or visited a locally run bookstore where the person working there knew your name and actually gave a damn about you? If you can't remember it's probably because they went out of business because you went to these larger corporate stores simply because it was more convenient. (Sadly I am guilty of this as much as anyone else, but the past few months I have drastically avoided many large stores, clothing stores, and restaurants simply because they are not even about quality anymore but profit and profit alone.) Fuck convenience and the blindness it instills in us. When's the last time you stopped to think about how you are contributing to the suffering thousands or millions of other people? Some stuff is cheap for us because it's made insanely cheaper overseas at the bidding of corporations. Does globalization ring a bell? (Clothing brands, shoe brands, toys, appliances. You name it, they slave to make it & get underpaid, we buy it overpriced. And who wins? Yep, the bloody corporations.) Also: Fuck SUV's and the people who drive them who NEVER carpool, and DON'T need a 4-wheel drive vehicle for the terrain on which they live. Fuck the automobile industry for touting their cars as status symbols. Cars get people around, that's what they were meant to do and that's all they should be used for. (Also, driving a high emission & bulky SUV all by yourself in downtown San Francisco and subsequently complaining that you can't find a parking spot big enough for it renders you a FUCKING STUPID YUPPY PRICK.
