MollyCule I try to figure out what movies people want when they tell me things like, "I don't know the title or anyone who's in it, OR what it's about, but i think it's from 1983." Also, I get hit on by old hillbillies quite often. 010820

ClairE I type in prices of foods. For one case of Dannon yogurt we pay $7.79. I also get tons of free food and sometimes type things up.

Special K I dream about being a Xerox repairman. Or a window cleaner. Or a grocery stock clerk. You know, a job that requires no skill, a job where the quality of performance is completely objective. "The machine was broken when I got there, it worked when I left, therefore I am a good worker." "The shelves were empty when I showed up, now they're fullanother job well done." I'm sick of working in design, where one person's subjective dislike for the color orange can invalidate the fruits of 3 months of your labor. Where "I don't like that font" loosely translates to "you're such a fucking moron, where did you say you went to school?"

You know at the end of Office Space, where the guy becomes a construction worker and looks happy as hell just to be outside? I watched that conclusion with painful envy. Ah, the forbidden joy of manual labor...

Rotten77 i am at work right now, so i obviously do this, and i'm talking on msn messenger and opening mail. today i've updated files on the comp, folded letters and answered the phones. it's not bad, really--pretty laid-back. 030506

jane the new agey shop was cool...it had good energy in there. the kind of place you couldn't really hate working...the people were really nice and it always smelled good.
but we got some weirdos in there. i remember one lady saying something like, "i forgot to feed the fairies. i should feed them when i get home, or they're going to be mad again..."

i do rock med, which is working at concerts, but nobody gets paid. actually vh1 just recently aired a piece on rock med...i remember when they came to film it i wasn't allowed to work

minnesota_chris I process files of people who have accidents and no drivers insurance. Then I send forms to them asking them to list their assets. If they don't fill out the form, or if they can't afford to pay for the accident, I take away their drivers' license. 030804

misstree i process medical claims. not too long after i started, there was a $3,000 ambulance claim from new year's eve for a 17-year old female, with diagnosis rape victim.

her father's policy started on new year's day.

i went home very, very depressed.

i have also bartended, waitressed, typeset books, assembles cell-phone batteries, been girl friday at a fiberglass boat refinishing/manufacturing place, been bookkeeper at a locksmith, cashier at two auto dealerships, done random temp work, worked at a toy store in a HUGE mall at christmastime, was on an order board for a wholesale upholstery fabric place, telemarketed (*shudder*), and worked at a gas station/chicken shack. i also read poetry on the streets of new orleans for a while, but the pay was really really shitty and the benefits were worse (aka, i survived off of it, and i was lucky to do that).

i should just get a job running poland and be done with it.

minnesota_chris I'm making a nice looking retaining wall, for some very nice people. It's kinda like the one I posted under

photos.yahoo.com/rehtalb

under blatherskite art.

Anyhow, I was digging out this wall space and pretty soon, I hit the original, unadulterated, non garden soil. The real stuff. Pure clay. Since it was wet (and digging clay soil is like trying to dig through Play Dough or bubblegum) I got a ball of it, wedged it and added some water, and made an ashtray. Then I made a little cow head sculpture. I mean, if you gotta work with clay, you gotta enjoy it a bit.

Lemon_Soda I research my local, regional, and national markets. I answer questions, compile information, and examine properties for prospects. I market properties or search for them for my clients. I do clerical work for a Senior Partner in our office. I spend a great deal of time meeting with people and discussing options concerned with various parts of my profession. I also blathe, visit benchilada.livejournal.com, www.myspace.com-misstree, and various other websites.

Objectively, I sit at a desk half my day and I sit at a conferance table or in a restaurant the other half. Any free time inbetween is in the car(See the People, See the Property).

ClairE Currently I scan barcodes, move books from place to place, answer the phone, and help librarians and patrons. I like it, although I might be outgrowing it.

I also scoop ice cream a couple of nights a week, which I've been doing on and off for about three years. I started with 20 hours a week when I was "underemployed", and my other 20 hours were working as an intern, where I cataloged articles for a homegrown database (very simple, just assigning terms from a small controlled vocabulary) and copying things.

Before that I worked on the Google book-scanning project at one of the libraries here, but I didn't work for the library, and I didn't work for Google. They hired professional book movers to transport the books being scanned and I worked for them. I don't know what I would have done without that job because I was emotionally and mentally unstable at that point and getting paid for an eight-hour day while working maybe one hour. I don't think I could have done more than that.

When I first moved to Boston I worked for an insurance brokerage firm. I hated it. I was okay at what I did but everyone was so concerned with television and thought I was bizarre. I felt like I was totally closeted and didn't feel that I could tell them I was getting my degree, and got fired when I didn't work overtime for no pay. I also worked a reference job while I was still at the insurance brokerage firm because I was frightened of having a gap on my resume. I had nothing to do there and my supervisor was crazy and unfriendly.

Before that I had some clerical jobs and more library jobs. Tada. I'm trying to work up the nerve to do something new!
