Greece is the farthest back my lineage has been traced. But, my ancestors were also German before they crossed the Atlantic in the 1700s. It's been a long journey for my family.

my grandfather is from England but his last name is Scottish so i'm some of that
my last name has been traced to english or french roots
one set of great-grandparents immigrateed from italy in the early 1900s...my great grandfather was a fashion designer or tailor or something...this all explains my love for clothes and italian food

No I think most of you are thinking of nationalities. Indian, Mexican, Caucasian, Asian are usually considered to be white. African American, Jamaican, Dominican, whatever are considered to be black. I heard this from my highschool comp teacher. He told my friend that she was considered white .. she's philipino, indian and mexican.. and she was blown away at the fact that someone considered her to be white.

Rereading this blather, I realized that people are using the terms race and nationality interchangably. As I understand it, race refers to being Caucausian, Mongoloid, etc. Nationality refers to what nation you are from. And ethnicity is usually used for the exotic, having to do with cultural background, which makes sense considering the OED defines it as "pertaining to nations not Christian or Jewish; Gentile, heathen, pagan". These definitions may not seem accurate to you, which is perfectly legitimate: we all have different definitions in our heads for words, especially those which are buzzwords. However, simply interchanging the terms makes communication less effective/efficient. On a side note, Marvin Harris' article "Race" in the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (ed. David L. Sills, 1979) is a great read, discussing "the history of the concept of race and the cultural definition of race"; I highly recommend it.

I'm amazed at how many turns this page took. Some interpreted it as being about heritage,and others thought it was about race. Some got angry,some didn't. This is probably one of my favourite pages just for the fact that there's so many different points of view in here. Anyway, here's my addition.
As far as the race thing goes,
I'm pretty sure I'm just white. On my mother's side,I know there's Irish and French heritage. I'm not sure if there's anything else. I've never asked,
but I did just find out recently that Pierre Trudeau was a distant cousin on my grandma's side--I think that's neat.
My father's heritage is a little trickier--his mother died a few years ago and she wasn't the "grandmotherly" type that you could talk to,so I never asked her. And my dad's father walked out on him when he was younger,so I won't know from him either. I've occasionally tried looking it up, but it's sort of an unusual name and I haven't found anything yet.

at the newspaper we do skin color by the numbers, for example:
aisian skin is 3percent cyan, 17percent magenta, and 29percent yellow.
dark african-american skin is 12-13percent cyan, 15-20percent magenta, and 25-35percent yellow.
