colors typhoid in re: ask_god colors are a funny thing. the human eye has three types of color receptors: red, green, and blue. several times as many green as either red or blue, which are about the same. each one responds primarily to a particular wavelength of light in the 400-700 angstrom range (blue about 450, green 500, and red 650). each doesn't pick up solely that frequency, though, they kinda overlap. the human brain interprets the electrical signals sent out by the photoreceptors, and in some complicated way makes you see a color. healthy humans can distinguish something on the order of 16 million colors this way. i would make an educated guess that people with colorblindness to a particular color are people with fucked up photoreceptors, either missing them entirely or having two combined into one. most animals, i think, don't have color photoreceptors, instead just having receptors that pick up the total intensity of light (humans have these in addition to the color ones). so, to answer a question, it would seem theoretically possible to design photoreceptors that are sensitive to other wavelengths of light using chemicals sensitive to different types of light, though i don't understand anything about how the signal processing would have to change to interpret this..
