*dies*

It involves New_York, love, the land, and writing.

And growing up, I suppose.

In this book of memoirs, his love Afton says to him, "When you write about me, make me fiery and lunar." (misquoted).
And he did.

THE END OF THE WORLD
by Haruki Murakami

Excerpt:
"The elevator continued its impossibly slow ascent. Or at least I imagined it was ascent. There was no telling for sure;: it was so slow that all sesnse of direction simply vanished. It could have been going down for all I knew, or maybe it wasn't moving at all. But let's just assume it was going up. merely a guess. Maybe I'd gone up twelve stories, then down three. Maybe I'd cicled the globe. How would I know?

G r i e v a n c e Hard Boiled Wonderland and
THE END OF THE WORLD
by Haruki Murakami

Every last thing about this elevator was worlds apart from the cheap die-cut job in my apartment building, scarcely one notch up the evolutionary sacale from a well bucket. you'd never believe the two pieces of machinery had the sam name and the same purpose. The two were pshing the outer limits conceivable as elevators.

First of all, cosider the sapce. ...

Another thing, most of the gadgets an elevator is supposed to have were missing. Where, for examplewas the panel with all th ebuttons and switches? No floor number to press, no DOOR OPEN and DOOR CLOSE, no EMERGENCY STOP. Nothing whatsoever. Alll of which made me feel utterly defenseless. And it wasn't just no buttons; it was no indication of advancing floor, no posted capacity or warning, not even a manufacturer's nameplate. Forgett about trying to even locate an emergency exity. Here i was, sealed in. No way this elevator could have gotten fire department approval. There was a norm for elevators after all."

poetic_onslaught i just finished reading "the talisman" by stephen king and peter auburn. it wasnt as good as people made it out to seem but it had its climaxes. anywayz there was a part of it that i didnt understand and i was wondering if anyone here knows. throughout the book jack sawyer kept saying "who plays those jerry bledsoe changes, daddy?" what does that mean? it seemed to evolve from "who plays that sax, daddy?" to "what changes, what changes" to "who plays those changes" to "who killes jerry bledsoe?" to "who played those jerry bledsoe changes, daddy?" then when that building colapsed because of an earthquake and killed those guys working on it he says "those changes? i know who plays them." i figured it would explain it later on in the book but it never did. does anyone here know? 020506
...
silentbob i certainly don't know but its been a long time since i read the book. maybe there's other connections in other stephen_king books or other peter straub books. i dont know. my teacher would tell me to read it again. maybe if you read the black house it might explain. its the sequel doncha know. but i doubt it would explain.

i don't know. stephen king and peter straub can often be obscure and bizarre. maybe it was their own inside joke.

misstree tourist already mentioned cat's_cradle by vonnegut, and teenage jesus mentioned robert anton wilson... but no sign of tom_robbins, especially still life with woodpecker. mindbending, hilarious, a critic once wrote that "tom robbins writes like dolly parton looks".. dripping, luscious wordplay, and "play" is the proper adjective.

also brokedown_palace by steven brust, which reads like a hungarian fairy tale written with the dreamlike realism that brust has truly mastered, as seen in his Taltos series (which this one vaguely ties in to).

and the_consumer by michael gira, not for the faint of heart... gira is more well known for his part in the gothic group "the swans", and has been named the angriest man in gothdom (though i would just vote for most twisted). i believe there is a brief example in stichomancy from this book of short stories. again, not for the faint of heart.
