anne-girl i love this book, i adore this book... i found this book sitting around yesterday casually among a bunch of others and snitched it and it's one of those terribly spiffy books which makes you think about so many things all at once that you can't digest them all and my brain kind of goes splat in happiness 050514

no reason "-he was intelligent, he understood her paintings, he was handsome and good--but the more she thought about it, the more she longed to ravish his intelligence, defile his kindheartedness, and violate his powerless strength."

the book is a piece of artwork.

? Why after billions of years of floating in a celestial ballet, did the cosmos bring into form a being? A being that was able to understand and explore the awesome wonder of existing in such a massive universe. One that could investigate and understand the tiny universe that lies beneath our fingertips and our senses, the atomic framework of our world. A being that could dominate the entire planet and every creature in it, to change the world to suit their needs. Is it meaningless? Is it just another process that occurs in the universe, just another form of energy playing itself out in the expanses of the universe, life death and renewal in another form. Could it be possible that our emotions blur the line between what’s real and what we think to be real, that this reality we are so immersed in consumes us, and much like a water is to a fish, this reality is all we can ever know. Perhaps death will reveal the ultimate explanation, or perhaps it will reveal nothing. 050514

epitome_of_incomprehensibility I just finished reading this a few days ago. It's refreshingly unusual and doesn't take itself too seriously. I liked the part where Tereza was trying to see her soul through her face and how this fits in with the theme of the book. The author's definition of "kitsch" didn't really make sense to me; could be due to preconcieved ideas relating to said word. 050729

anne-girl i liked the definition of kitsch - it described an idea which I'd had for a while, but hadn't been able to pin down
maybe it's one of those things where there isn't exactly a word for a_thought, so you have to grab the nearest thing and partially redefine it
