i hope it's not earthquake season. the scientists will say that strings of earthquakes are unrelated, but give me a break, they also say they don't understand it very well. no big ones in Turkey or Seattle, please. if it pleases.

They say relationships are like buildings.. I've seen so many little phrases about building strong foundations, throwing rocks from the glass windows.. so many comparisons about the little building that you eventually put your life's work into. I'd say we are like that. We have a nice little cottage out in the country, with an oak swing and a doghouse (though we have no dog) and we sit out on the porch sometimes and talk about life and love in the misty rain. We watch the haze make rainbows in the lawn, and it almost feels like God himself plays with the twilight just for our simple earthly amusement. I watch the roses grow up the trellaces, and I look at her, and I wonder which flower did nature create more finely. Very seldom do I think back to the places I've lived before, before her and I met. I don't think of the blackened walls on perhaps a distant world (for that's where it seems it was). All I see is her, and the iced tea that sweats its ice through the class onto the redwood rails of our porch. I feel the tremors through the ground, but I'm not worried. Her and I have no fear of earthquakes here. Either we've invested in proper earthquake construction techniques, or either we just love each other. And we sip our tea, or lemonade, and we look at each other.. and we just warmly know the truth. (for Rhinna - 4 Jul 01)

last year i used to wake up in the middle of the night, with my adrenalin pumping and my panicked thoughts, "oh my god, its an earthquake!" before remembering that there are no earthquakes in boston and that la was very far away and that my roomate had been tossing in her sleep again. im always scared that one day im going to read the newspaper and find out that california was hit by a monster earthquake and that the entire state had been separated from the rest of the continent and was floating around the pacific ocean, slowly sinking.

there was an earthquake yesterday. up in the building and all of the sudden i feel motion sickness. we all stare at the blinds and it seems they are swaying back and forth. outside, the ducks quacking like mad...and well, it took us a while, but the shaking finally helped us realize it. it was a shake, it was more like a wave and everything just moved. the world danced and shook, so we responded. it seems somewhere in the middle of this great state, there was a 6.4 earthquake. that's pretty good one. do you know some people are afraid of quakes? i can't imagine. i think they are ridiculously fun.

Science Is Left a Bit Rattled by the Quake That Didn't Come Wed Sep 8, 7:55 AM ET http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=2026&ncid=2026&e=1&u=/latimests/scienceisleftabitrattledbythequakethatdidntcome "that a moderate quake would rattle the California desert before Sept. 5". Keilis-Borok, a seismologist and mathematical geophysicist, thought he and his international team of scientists had found the magic bullet last year. The team examined "precursory chains" of small quakes that had occurred in the past to develop predictions about larger quakes that would occur in the future. The Keilis-Borok team does not predict the date, place or magnitude of a quake. Rather, it uses general times and locations.
