if snowfall exceeds four inches, do not park your car on the street, so snow plows can clear the roads and stuff in a city where most people park their cars on the street, just another money grubbing city ordinance. build some more condos on parking lots, make some more ticket revenue. there was a squirrel chilling on my porch licking up the new snowflakes. while i am usually inclined to chase them away in the noisiest way possible, the little dude looked at me with such a despondent flash, i just shut the fuck up. eventually he scampered away. no matter what way you walk, the wind is always blowing in your face.

the beauty and power of winter is lost on so many. the cold meeting the warmth, it's a lingering promise too often unfulfilled these days. left waiting, suggested, and passed by. is an autumn baby.

winter has always been oddly comforting to me especially during the worst years of my depression. and then of course the sledding and hot chocolate and making christmas cookies and decorating the tree and the smell of my mom's homemade applesauce invading the house of my childhood. the puffy alien snowsuits and boots of the 80s, the welcome routine interruption of snow days. on_contentment i suppose there are plenty of awesome things about winter. i did have a strong urge to roll around in the freshly fallen snow before the stinking rain started yesterday. snowball fights yes those are still quite fun

In Montreal, it's been snowing pretty well continuously since yesterday... 30 centimetres are expected... that's 1 foot, or the size of a ruler. (I've always liked rulers. Especially the flexible plastic kind you can bend back and send hurtling across a 4th grade classroom. Provided you happen to be a 4th grader--such behaviour by teachers is not encouraged.) Why am I thinking about classrooms? Well, my brother's school is closed, the high school FACE is closed, John Abbott is closed, but I had class this morning. Universities I guess are sacred. If Concordia was picked up in a tornado and dropped in the Land of Oz, I'm pretty sure classes would continue as usual. "We're talking about Saussure's linguistic theories. Please ignore the squeaking midgets at the window."

We definitely got the storm. It's been snowing for close to a full day now, and is forecast to stop sometime tomorrow evening. The trail onto campus across a field was forming a trench as single-filed students trudged up and down a beaten path, huddled beneath toques and scarfs.

walking to school today was a bit of an adventure. some of the sidewalks were plowed. were they weren't it was usually on a side street, so walking down the road wasn't bad, but then i got to the point where the road was crazy busy and dangerous with snowdrifts up to my thigh. i'm happy i didn't fall over running through that.

it keeps falling. they said on the radio not to go out. i spent less than a minute outside today, still in my pjs, running to the other door to the apartments in this building (shop-top style) to put my rent in the dropbox. got some strange looks on the street, those questioning eyes "who is this strange young man running around downtown in slippers and pajamas in the middle of the a blizzard?"

the municipal workers in my hometown have been on strike for two weeks. the schools have been closed for 10 days straight. my parents had to expressly request for the street to be cleared by private contractors, with the city picking up the bill, because they were worried when a fire truck got stuck in the snow (there was no fire). here, though, we have a lot of snow, but not so much. no strike either.

on wednesday we received 30 cm of snow. yesterday it started snowing again. we're at about 25 since the storm started, and it's set to reach 50cm by the time it ends tomorrow. that'll bring us within striking distance of the highest recorded snow fall in the city's recorded history. my pedestrian ways take me out into the snow, there's no way to avoid it. but it's beautiful. gently falling, blindingly white. sharing secret smiles with the few strangers i pass in the street as we //know// the frigid beauty of the season.

i think i live in pasts' general neck of the woods, because we were slated to get roughly the same snowfall (between 30 and 40 cm; possibly more). It's been snowing since yesterday. =0/ I went to shovel some snow earlier (just enough to keep a clear path so as not to get trapped indoors), and it was ice raining/snowing at the time. Ugh, lifting that snow was like lifting huge shovel-fulls of wet sand--just incredibly heavy and exhausting. I'm gonna hurt something awful tomorrow. =0(

(it was actually sunny here today too. as for it being warm or dry enough to go strolling in the park, i guess that won't be happening any time soon.)
