DISCOVER Vol. 24 No. 8 (August 2003) Table of Contents Close Encounter With Mars Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular By Bob Berman "This month, Mars makes its big move on Earth, but there is no need to worry: What we are about to face is not an invasion from Mars but an invasion by Mars. On August 27 the Red Planet will approach to 34,649,589 miles, closer than it has been at any time in recorded history. Mars will attain a magnitude of -2.9, far outshining everything else in the night sky. Finding it will be easy. Just glance up a couple of hours after sunset on a clear evening and let the dazzling, non-twinkling "star" low in the southeast grab your attention. Never again in your lifetime will Mars be so spectacular. Planetarium computer programs such as Starry Night make it a snap to figure out when Mars will next pay such a close call: August 28, 2287. Ascertaining the last time Mars came this near is more challenging. The gravitational interplay of the planets constantly alters the shapes of Earth's and Mars's orbits, from rounder to more oval and back again. As a result, the narrowest gap between the two worlds continually mutates. Orbital calculations get ever fuzzier the farther back in time you go. We do know it has been at least 5,000 years, and probably more like 60,000 years, since Mars cozied up this close to us. Strictly speaking, Earth is the one doing the cozying. Our planet, circling the sun at 18.3 miles per second, overtakes Mars, which lopes along at 16.4 miles per second in its orbit. As Earth approaches, Mars appears to stop its normal west-to-east motion across the sky and to temporarily track east to west (known as retrograde motion) among the dim stars of Aquarius. At the beginning of the month, the planet will rise at 10 p.m. and reach its pinnacle at about 3 a.m. By the end of August, the planet will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point at 12:30 a.m. The planet will also grow steadily bigger and brighter as it migrates to more convenient viewing hours. At its peak, Mars will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide in the August sky. At a modest 75-power magnification, the planet will look as large as the full moon does to the naked eye. All the same, backyard telescope owners may be slightly disappointed by what they see. The real Mars is yellow orange, not red, and its dusky surface features do not have the dramatic contrast of the color-enhanced images NASA distributes. Observers will need a sharp eye to see the subtle markings that pop into focus during the moments when Earth's atmosphere steadies. During those seconds of clarity, look for the white south polar cap, tiny now because the southern Martian summer is about to begin. The Mars Odyssey spacecraft, orbiting the planet since 2001, recently revealed that the southern cap consists mostly of water ice, not frozen carbon dioxide as astronomers had believed for decades. That discovery enhances the odds that life once took hold in or under the rusty sands of Mars, although the total amount of water we have detected there is minuscule compared with Earth's oceans. Expect more Mars news soon. The European Space Agency's Mars Express, along with two NASA rovers, should be en route to the Red Planet right now. If you want a good look at Mars for yourself, however, you must act quickly. Earth speeds 5 million miles closer to the planet during August but pulls away just as quickly in September. As a result, Mars nearly doubles in brilliance between August 1 and 27, then loses all that extra light during September. Likewise, the planet's apparent size grows and shrinks rapidly. The smaller Mars gets, the more magnification you'll need to scrutinize its surface. Fortunately, Mars stays adequately large this month and the next. That will give you plenty of time to badger any friends who have large telescopes." ...

Mars rules Aries. Aries marks the beginning of the cycle. Aries is symbolized by the Ram which begins as a Lamb and is symbolic of heroic sacrifice, leadership, beginnings, energy, innocence and jealousy. Mars, of course, rules change, energy and push. In the Aries influence this is marked by heroic beginnings (change), competitiveness (energy) and inspiration or glory(push). It is the face of ACTIVE, open, proactive change. This is how the masculine influence mixes up the pot. In the Scorpio influence (coruled by Mars)this is marked by revelation sparking revolution(change), ambition or empathy(energy) and power or mystery(push). Scorpio is symbolized by the Scorpion or the Eagle and represents mystery, deeper meaning, revenge, power, politics, control of the emotions and the sexual organs among other things. This is the face of the more passive side(although Mars influenced people are hardly ever truly passive) of the Martian influence, the more behind-the-scenes, reactive changes borught about by MArtian influence. This is how the femenine influence mixes up the pot. Jealousy also seems to factor in somehow. It is a common trait of both Scorp and Aries people. Ambition and competition are breeding grounds for conflict and power struggles. Jealousy can tear apart relationships, destroy homes and divide nations. But jealousy can also be the one sincere display of affection that some are capable of allowing themselves, while energy and change can be driving forces for progress and prosperity..better times, better people and better societies through difficult lessons learned, in difficult times. Societies strengthened by common suffering or bound by common hope. Mars likes to mix it up and keep em guessing and supposedly there's a softspot in Mars' heart for the courageous..particularly on Tuesdays, (in Spanish "Martes" or Mars Day)it's said. I'll be enjoying the show for sure.

november 2005: the watchers they all came out and looked at the sky that night. they left their suppers or their washing up or their dressing for the show and they came out on their not-quite-as-new porches and watched the green star of earth there. it was a move without concious effort, they all did it to help them understand the news they had heard on the radio a moment before. there was earth and there the coming war and there hundreds of thousands of mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles and cousins. they stood on the porches and tried to believe in the existence of earth, much as they had once tried to believe in the existence of mars. it was a problem reversed. to all intents and purposes, earth now was dead; they had been away from it for three or four years. space was an anasthetic; seventy million miles of it numbed you. at nine o'clock, the earth seemed to explode; catch fire; burn. the people on the porches put up their hands and waved them, as if to put the fire out. they waited. by midnight, the fire was extinguished. earth was still there. and nobody moved. they brought their dinners outside and sat and ate, silently. then around two o'clock, the light radio message flashed from earth. they could read the great morse-code flashes which flickered like a distant firefly: AUSTRALIAN CONTINENT ATOMIZED IN PREMATURE EXPLOSION OF ATOMIC STOCKPILE. LOS ANGELES, LONDON BOMBED. WAR. COME HOME. COME HOME. they stood up from their tables. COME HOME. COME HOME. COME HOME. COME HOME. COME HOME. at three, in the chilly morning, the luggage proprieter went outside and looked up. a lot of people were coming down the street. by dawn, the luggage was gone off of the shelves. They need to just go ahead and put one of those little robot camera vehicles right next to one of_the surface "structures" that folks have been debating about for years -- you_know, especially the_one that looks like a human face -- so we can all get on with our lives. I mean, gee... this has been going on for TOO LONG! WE MUST FIND OUT THE EFFING TRUTH! SOME OF US ARE HEADING FOR A BAD END!!!! A VERY VERY BAD END!!!!!!!
