copyright
namelss i just hate it when people write something and then write under it "copyright". yeah, so its not yours-if you you're gonna copy someone else's words, at least give him credit, like his name or something but "copyright" is really useless. 000117

Q putting "copyright" or the equivalent at the end of a piece means it IS yours and nobody else is supposed to copy it, modify it, translate it, or the like without your permission

you're right, though, about posting of others' work. if somebody posts a large fraction of another's piece of work, permission should first be obtained from the copyright owner of the copyright in the work (if it has not expired) and, in any case, the person whose work it is should be acknowledged by name as the author.

cube Personally, i find copyright notices insulting. The annoyance immediately wipes away any good feelings i may have had about the authors' work. The author is saying, in effect, "i don't trust you" and/or "my work is so much better than anything you could create".

Well, f_ck you too. In future, please place the copyright notice at the top of the piece so i don't have to be subjected to your insecurities...

Dafremen Ok, just to make this VERY clear. If you publicly display something that you have written and it appears with your name and a date before anyone else displays it publicly or copyrights it(and you can prove it), you have legal grounds to the copyright, no matter what. Anyone trying to copyright it before you COULD get the copyright, UNTIL you found out and sued them to smithereenies. So much for putting the WORD "COPYRIGHT" on your brainchildren. Course, then again...there might be an ego to contend with, in which case, disregard that last sentence. 020602

Kitten When I put my poetry on Blather I don't copyright it, but everywhere else I do. I am a published poet and its kind of important.
But when I put poetry on here, I want people to read it and use it. Whether it touches them on a deeper level and they want to keep it for themselves, or they think its shit and want to show it to their friends for a good laugh.

What do I care! That's what poetry is all about isn't it? Getting seen, being read?
As long as they acknowledge that its mine then I couldn't give a shit.

the simple act of putting "copyright" and then a year isn't actually copyrighting something. you have to go to some special place or something to get it actually, legally copyrighted.

kss this probably stems from the

hallabaloo that floated around for a while. People may be afraid they will not get props/$$$ if any of this were someday claimed as the "property" of blather's owners/creators.

I agree it's annoying. but, I guess if people really think their words might be worth something, it's understandable. if the situation ever arisies, I just walk in there with a gun 'negotiate' my fair share... heh heh.

Dafremen Ok, I thought I'd made it clear, but apparently not. You do NOT have to go to some special place. You do not have to write to Washington DC. What you have to do is create a hardcopy (of some sort) of your literary idea and have some way of proving when you created it. Blather fulfills both of these requirements for you. Although legally registering your copyright goes a long way toward avoiding infringment, it is not necessary as the mere appearance of your work prior to the date that any infringer used it would be sufficient to prove your claim to the copyright. If you wrote it here, it's legally your copyrighted material. 030422

User24 not really, even if they could prove that the particuar entry was made by my IP address, there's never any guaruntee (sp?) that someone wasn't spoofing it (pretending to be me)

In order to prove beyond doubt, you'd need to have:

a) the IP address stored against each entry, along with date and time

b) corresponding logs from my ISP, stating that I did upload the information to blather

... I think that's it.. it wouldn't be too hard

ignore this besides, even if you did 'copyright' your words here, and somehow it was all legally perfect, you've still then got to read everything anyone ever writes, to make sure it's not the same as what you've copyrighted, now besides the fact that I don't think most people here could afford an international law suit, I also don't think anyone here has the time to make sure their works aren't getting illegally copied from blather.

In addition to this, you'd have to eat cakes until you burst in order to become as fat as the fat cats running the operation, so there's really no point.
