The key to the socialization of any species, including humans, is cooperation. As individuals, providing for basic needs is a full-time duty, but as society develops upon the foundation of cooperation, it becomes possible for the needs of all to be provided with less effort overall than would be so as individuals. A hunter-gatherer tribe of 20 to 30 members requires about 2 to 3 hours of work per person, per day to provide for its needs. As the tribe grows, specialized skills develop. One individual can do task_a very well, so it is of benefit to allow the individual to do so full time for the benefit of all. Specialization of skills leads in turn to trade of favors - individual a agrees to do task_a for individual b, who does task_b for individual a. This is the barter system. The barter system fails, however, if individual a has no need of task_b. Enough failures prompt the invention of a score-keeping system - barter now and claim later. Individual a owes individual b some number of favors. If three or more individuals all agree upon the score keeping system, then individual b may claim the favors owed him by individual a, not from a, but instead from individual c. A then owes his favors to C instead. This is called a cooperative. A cooperative with too many members grows beyond the abilities of centeralized record keeping. Instead, the cooperative will issue holdable tokens. If individual a does a favor for individual b, B will give a token to A to be redeemed later in the manner of A's own choosing. This is currency. So currency is introduced as an arbitrary accounting method, where a token of no real value becomes exchangable for goods and services that ARE of real value by way of agreement of the group. The unfortunate side effect is that this encourages the members to work, not for the good of the community, but so they may hoard tokens. The individuals become slaves to the arbitrary, artificial score keeping system of their own invention. In the absence of society, a dollar has no real value. It is not nourishing, it is not shelter, it is not clothing. Frankly, it doesn't even burn that well. But as long as we wish to be members of this society, we must value the scorekeeping system to the point that it keeps us fed, clothed, and sheltered, at minimum. The next level of evolution in the score keeping system is the socialization of all needs and wants, followed by the abolishion of currency. An acceptably affluent society would have no problems providing for the needs and realistic wants of its members. On paper, anyway. So far in human history, every such social experiment has failed... miserably. ~"~

As Oil Prices Boil . . . Friday, August 20, 2004 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17280-2004Aug19.html?nav=rss_opinion/columns The oil market right now is a sort of inverse bubble, propelled by its own momentum of anxiety and bad news. Wherever analysts look for reliable sources of oil, they see trouble -- in Iraq, in Saudi Arabia, in Russia, in Venezuela. Some economists are warning about a full-blown energy crisis, with prices rising to $65 or more until they bring on a global recession that finally slows demand. ?
