(today in pa begins a process that may end up in the new supreme court (as yet still in flux). we will likely see evolution discredited as merely a theory. in the near future the minute (but important) shades of distinction between spirituality and religiosity will be examined to see if the separation of church (religion) and state is going to stand. if it can be established that intelligent design is not connected to religiosity, then we may see in our lifetimes undemonstrated theory taught along side the gleanings of empirical science and tauted as a reasoned alternative. i feel this would be a drastic wound to american progress academically, politically and socially. i respect peoples right to engage in belief in whatever gets them through their days and nights. i ask them in return to respect that science is not spirituality and never will be. science cannot be based on unsupported assertions that complexity equals design and therefore there must be a designer. the separation of religion and state has fostered the freedom to believe what we wish. many, many sects of religious tradition would be operating in hostile territory here without it. would the religious prefer a state church, ascendant and with power to suppress the others? (i think the answer is yes, if it was their version of faith which was in power.) if we want to see an open society continue (and i do) then we must not allow these walls to erode. it's our liberty that is at stake. what do you think?)

whether or not science and its practitioners have something in common with the practitioners of some religions is irrelevant. what's relevant is that science differs from most religions in that it is largely descriptive rather than normative and finds authority in the empirical realm rather than looking to metaphysical possibilities. the fallacy implied by your statement is that because religion and science share some attributes, science must therefore also share the other attributes largely associated with religion.

heretic: do you mean a priori assumptions are key to the basis of any description of reality and that this equates scientific method with creationism? if so i say that relativism and the empirical method are good enough for me. there has to be a threshold for what constitutes proof. sd: i could not have said it better, because you did. if science were a religion, then i would be very devout. That it is not is a good thing, because then i would be obliged to say that it should not be taught in public school in the united states.

there is hardly separation of church and state in this country when politicians can win races based on an obviously religious platform. yes, conservative zealots have taken over this country. it's a rather sad fact. and an even sadder fact is that most liberals are too afraid of losing their precarious footing to stand up to them. i know i've had this arguement before ( church_and_state maybe?) but i still personally find it abhorrent that in the 21st century politics and religion are so intertwined as to be inseperable. and it only seems to be getting worse. and i would have to say that the actions of our supposedly christian president are decidedly unchristian. what about 'love thy neighbor' and 'do unto others as you would have done unto you' ? that last one is pretty scary to think about when i think about all that the united states have done to their neighbors in the past five years. as far as society goes, let people use the law to justify their own stupidity. and in twenty or thirty years when it is painfully biting all of us in the ass, at least i will be able to smirk and say i told you so. i bitch about how there's no revolution, but i don't want to start one. if you can look at a chimp and then look at any human being and say you don't see a connection, then *shrugs*. unhinged: yes. i know your pain. we seem to be suffering again and again, as a species, from the same thing worldwide: the concept of moral high ground. conservatives almost always win because they face outward from a fundamentalist center. people who are susceptible to the rhetoric of god's truth (or whatever you care to call it) find both guilt and comfort in the moral certainty that it claims to espouse. the idea that with all our flaws, transgressions and missteps, we can look outside of ourselves for guidance and hope that we can one day join the ranks of the devout. the essential idea is that even though we do not live up to the ideal, we hold that ideal as right, good and positive. and so people give away their responsibility for ethical and moral decisions and trust an oligarchy of the spirit (most of whom are old men). of course relativism has become a pejorative to these leaders. relativism is, by definition, not certainty. it can (and invariably does) express as different truths for each individual. the world is moving into a small dark age. i will not go with it. i am proud to call myself a relativist. know your own truth. create your own truth. live your own truth. **steps down from soapbox**

all women want to know that they are loved. it is innate. it is something every girl, since being small, wants. a prince to sweep her off her feet and romance her until the end of time. all men want to know if they can accomplish what's before them. they have a hard time beginning something if they don't feel they can accomplish it. thus the pain and beauty... women wanting to be loved, men not sure if they can... stuck in a vicious cycle, that one can only break if a woman realizes that above all, she is loved already and if the man realizes that he has already succeeded if he loves her for who she is. women, trust your men. men, romance your women.
