ineffable
once again God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of the other players (everybody), to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules and who smiles [all the time]. 031002

Freak I can't see this word without thinking of Cats.

"When you notice a cat in profound meditation
The reason, I tell you, is always the same
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought,of the thought, of the thought of his name

His ineffable, effable, effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name"

Miss Kaycie Rose Whoa, whoa, whoa, I'm sorry, Doesn't ineffable mean indescrible? I guess so would God, but I mean, it doesn't have to do with being Godly or anythind, does it? Because I don't want the wrong definition. 040707

secretary according to wittgenstein, ineffability, the quality of being ineffable, is a characteristic of a true religious -or rather, spiritual- experience. in essence, the encounter is beyond comprehension and therefore defies the confines of human description. he states that the inability to communicate a true encounter with the infinite, due to the finite nature of human beings and their language, is one (of seemingly many) reasons that human beings might never be able to fully comprehend the infinite.

in the end, it's just a word.

unhinged we gotta try to communicate somehow right?

the_dalai_lama_laughs and the divine oozed out of him, the way he moved, his deep voice like a blanket. the way the tibetan tumbled out of his mouth was like something in my ear coming home.

secretary i wrote my senior thesis on how we attept to communicate the ineffable through art, both visual and performative. of all the ways we --as finite beings-- communicate, self expression with color and sound may be the most effective to convey that which defies description. 071210

f you said that "the divine is communicated in action not words" is speaking or writing not an action then?
why do you need to discuss what is divine and what is not?

If you knew, then it would not be something to discuss, knowing or understanding is something held within. If you can not describe in words or pictures or sounds what your soul is then do not try to dissect the meaning of the word divine.

Some knowledge is not bought or gained, it is not an exam you get marked on. The fact that you think the divine is communicated through action (assuming a more physical action than writing or speaking) is making me understand that you are looking beyond what is in front of you, searching for answers outside of yourself, you want proof in a solid form in order to believe in something.

I wonder what you classify as being solid? Is an echo solid, do you you believe in it although you hear a sound from the past? And how about silence where can you place it? how can it be real if you can't see, touch, smell, hear or taste it?
these are not words they are only reflections of my past, analysis is not always necessary.

fuffle if the Dalai Lama wasn't found when he was a young boy then i wonder what might have happened to him, there is so much danger and bad influence in the world, i wonder if he would have found his own way to peace? Maybe where he was situated in the world might have given him more chance to live in a peaceful environment (not forgetting what happened to Tibet of course). It is not so easy in the west to live a peaceful simple life, there is people pushing and pulling from all directions and sometimes it's hard to listen to yourself when there is so much noise, stress and desperation. If you barricade yourself from your surroundings you are living a protected lie, if you face the truth you inevitably struggle against the current but you learn to be a better swimmer. You get influenced and effected by whatever is around you and nothing can control a natural flow, it is when you force control it attracts conflict and sadness and pain. 071210

unhinged I don't particularly need to discuss the divine. my theological education as a child was 'there is a god and your relationship with god is personal.' only went to church when my mom's mom wanted the family to be there; and i felt weird, alienated. didn't get it. i thought sitting outside on a nice day made me closer to god than sitting inside the stuffy smelly silent church.

some that find the divine want to share. if the buddha had kept silent about the divine because he felt there was no need to communicate it...all the religious prophets of the past millenia...yeah i'm too tired to articulate that one.

and if the dalai lama had not been found he probably would have died a torturous death or been deported to a chinese culturation school where they tried to deprogram all the young tibetan children. and if he had been lucky enough to escape all that he would 1) either be a farmer in a land that breaks backs or 2) be a refugee in the himalayan foothills of india
