i downloaded something by him once off gutenberg, and was going to read it, but didn't i think making things easy to get kind of devalues them... download, sync to pda, done and done in five minutes and forget about it in another two (just a tangential thought)

the "philosophical investigations" are good, imho. also the blue and brown books, but I haven't read them as thoroughly.

(what i know in summary of jacob needleman's interpretation) let go of language- it won't help you access Reality

language once had a purpose- to help us access the infinite/eros/true reality- but now it is an empty shell

what mine? i was pretty pleased with it :-) I'm doing one on Private Language soon. The thought is that if there was a man on a desert island, who had never ever encountered other people (or animals, let's say) he wouldn't have any kind of language. that is to say, language is a social creation. I'm probably going to argue that we do have a private, inner language, but that it bears so little resemblance to anything we know as langauge that it tends to make philosophers think that we don't/can't have private language. I.e., there is something behind our words (=thoughts), but it's not a 'language' as such. or something. :-)

language tries to model reality. it probably fails.

i use an inner language that has been in continual development as long as i can remember (approaching three decades). the language is not english and does not resemble english nor is it structured remotely like english; i've seldom attempted to apply phoenetics to it. i'm not sure i could teach it to someone if i tried. that said, i cannot pretend as if being an english speaker/listener/reader/writer has not influenced the language in myriad ways, for it surely has done so more than the private language has influenced my use of the public ones.
