people that want to be their subcultures are often the worst representatives of them. and saying that you want to be your subculture brings up the question: who is to say that individuals *should* attempt to be three-dimensional? surely there is some comfort in being a cardboard cutout, having your personality dictated to you, rather thanm fighting to forge it and then fighting to justify it and fighting to keep it, traveling your own path with no sherpa, not even a compass? so the question becomes: why would you or wouldn't you want to become a member of the living dead?

im already dead it doesnt matter i dont want to be an individual doing that was the worst mistake i ever made i never actually said i wanted to be my subculture i said maybe maybe leaves open a world of possibilities escape routes through which i can scramble, no longer vulnerable to the people who dictate that i SHOULD be different. if i want to be my subculture, who are you to stop me? you say that people who are their subcultures are often the worst representatives of them i dont care if you think it applies to me because its all i have its a security blanket a wall to block the people who try to invade so its up to me and if thats what it makes me then im fine with being one of the living dead.

i'm not attacking... you had an interesting point, and so i used a question to flip me own perspective into indeterminate state... i can honestly see the comfort in that... i long ago realized that different people find comfort in very different states of being... and i could see it as possible that by choosing to craft one's identity around a subculture, there is an inherent uniqueness... but it is living life wearing a mask... it is crafting oneself according to outside rules, rather than by taking each piece and holding it up before the judges and tradesmen, to be either ejected or cannibalized for useful bits or added... i simply say that i see your point, that it is not my or anyone's place to tell someone they *should* evolve, that they *should* be an individual... i limit myself to the suggestion that one should "live by the foma that makes you wise and brave and happy and free"... such a life is so different from mine, it is hard to grok... almost like the military... "to each their own" is a very easy phrase to forget... and though i get ranty sometimes, it's my own way of peddling my wares... no one has to buy any of it...

sorry, i didnt mean to rant so much its just a pain in the ass when everyone says that you should be an individual i am an individual in a sense, just a steroetypical one i find comfort in my subculture; i am seen by people, but i am with others i am never alone its warm and happy giving up the rejection and humiliation of my previous individuality is a small price to pay for that im not a sheep, i have my own mind however, its like being in the army; someone has your back like i said before, its like i am never alone to you im sure this seems like a very strange life to live, even though to me its familiar your life of complete individuality and freedom scares me no familiarity there permanent vulnerablility and no guaranteed friendship or care. most people tell me that i shouldnt be my subculture thats why i ranted sorry again i needed to blow off steam

nobody's ever allowed to rant and blow off steam around here. mortal sin. to the guillotine with you. you opened my eyes to the flip side of the coin. it *is* very alien to me, but i'm glad for the perspective. i'll be chewing on this for a while.

No one is. Consider the definition. There is no room for hopes, dreams, fears, and inner turmoil in a class that completely dictates your opinions, decisions, and beliefs. No class has that power since from birth to death your mind is your own and constantly changing. Taking in your environment, finding a place to survive, accepting happiness, and overcoming defeat. A stereotype is static, unchanging, witch is something humans just arn't. Even if you hold to the same values and morals your entire life, not swaying for an instant, you still had to form them first, and they can't keep you from aging, either. Change runs rampant. I think the real issue here is that so many people have these programmed mental responses to seeing this outfit, that car, or those CDs that they don't stop to remember that not a singal person on the planet actually completely fulfills the criteria of these stereotypes. Respectful, objective filters, Please. If you really wanna get along, just remember that all things change, for ill or good, then, now, and later.

I find it troubling that Abercrombie and Fitch and Gap and Oakley and Doc Marten are considered compass points on which people are expected to orient their fashion senses. I remember when Birkenstocks hit the scene in high school...man, you could tell who was part of which group just by looking at their feet. And before Birks, it was Cole Haans, and before that, it was British Knights (milkshakes, remember?). It never stops. There's always something new that *everyone* has to have. And if it ain't GQ that's telling you about fashion, it's Playboy, and if it ain't Playboy, it's Maxim. I'm sure there's some comfort in participating in the mainstream subculture (of whatever flavor), especially if you're looking for anonymity, but still, how much nicer is it to be defined by something other than your wardrobe?

is it the car you drive? is it the coffee you drink? is it the snowboard you own? is it the computer you use? is it the neighborhood you live in? is it the school you attend? is it the books you read? is it the place you work? is it the religion you follow? is it the websites you visit? no. you are not the car you drive. you are not the coffee you drink. you are not your snowboard. you are not your 800 mHz processor. you are not your Wash Park apartment. you are not the university you attend. you are not your poetry collection. you are not your hippy corner market. you are not your religious affiliation. you are not your web-surfing habits. does this capture your original intent, sabbie?

you_are_what_you_eat anybody not heard that phrase? it exists i always used to think it was funny, or weird, whatever you can be what you own, where you work, what car you drive etc you can say i am my car we think alike (assuming a car thinks that is) you can say that if you want you can be your car if you want, your choice who's to say that you aren't to be your subculture?? you can be people are so different, you can't even presume to know what they think or what they want everybody is an individual, no matter how alike they seem. if you presume to tell them all that they aren't their subculture etc then it's unfair you're dictating to them what they can and cannot be i see your point, i know what you mean people cannot be their objects, their possessions. however, a subculture is NOT a possession, and it is not an object people can live it i do i am a living contradiction to this thread if you think about it, people can be their subcultures read what i posted earlier, about how i am mine i know you probably disagree with me but i think i have a point here.
