Okay. Here's an example of how it works... You're reading a book. You come upon a word you have never seen in your life. You look it up. You think to yourself, "What a waste of time. I'll never see that word again. Shoot, I've been reading books for over_thirty years, why did the author dig up such an obscure word?" One day later... You're in the doctor's office waiting room. You pick up a Newsweek. You find an article of interest. Lo_and_behold, guess what word appears in the article? Still not convinced that the word should even be in your vocabulary, you ask your nurse if she's ever heard of the word. She says, "Sure," and proceeds to give you the definition. From that point on, you see the word used with regularity. Could your life have been twisting its way around this word for thirty years? -

this happens to me all of the time. I think I've figured it out though. we have seen that word before, but since we didn't know what it meant, we scanned right over it. Not processing it because we didn't have a use for it. I know my theory is true. It has to be because it happens to frequently. Now that we know the word a little light goes on and we go oh! there's that word, and later realize this word is pretty common........now that WE know it

That's YOUR theory. And it certainly warrants merit... I'm not convinced yet.

i dont buy the "was always around just never noticed cuz definition was unknown" theory one bit. i always look up every word i dont know immediately; i have since i was a kid. there is no way i was simply failing to notice these words which occasionally show up en masse out of nowhere. perhaps it is chance and perhaps it is some sort of meaningful connicity, but the above theory simply does not hold for this guy.

Well it should be too frequently not to frequently. We do grammar checks around here, partner! Secondly, the word fairy is bullcrap. You can't just expect the word "Jodhpurs" to start magically appearing everywhere only because you just learned it. These words have been lurking in the shadows and come up all at once like an unclogged drain. It reminds (sp?) me, those words you never figure out how to spell 100% and then they all come up on a single damn quiz at the first day in my writing class, Like dilemma which I always try to spell dillema. Or separate which I spelled seperate for 5354 years. These are not common problem words, they all seemed to be my specific problem words. Recently I have seen a couple of words that I only know how to say, its (never it's) amazing to me that I have never seen any of them spelled out before; I use them all the time. It is just a coincidence.

oh_my_god! even weirder now - dig this: just two days ago, i was at a picnic with my dog, and a lady came up and asked if she was a landseer. my dog always invokes a lot of questioning - almost always the exact same line of questioning: person: is that a st. bernard? me: no, actually, she's a newfoundland. person: really? i thought they were all black. me: they're called Landseer when they're black and white. i must've had that conversation a billion times. so imagine my surprise when this lady comes up and asks if she's a landseer. i say yes, enthusiastically, and she tells me it's like that thing, where you see something new, and you look it up, and it starts showing up everywhere. does that mean the new_word_observation transcends language and is really a new_thing_observation? does that mean i'll be encountering new_thing_observations everywhere? i feel like i've broken the time_space_continuum...

OREN. there is a name for this, i just found it, and in case you ever come back here, i wanted to post it here for posterity's sake. Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon List of cognitive biases: Decision-making, belief, and behavioral biases: Frequency illusion: "The illusion in which a word, a name or other thing that has recently come to one's attention suddenly seems to appear with improbable frequency shortly afterwards (not to be confused with the recency illusion or selection bias).[39] Colloquially, this illusion is known as the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon.[40]" see also: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_cognitive_biases&redirect=no#Frequency_illusion
