blather.puremango.co.uk you can now ignore blatherskites by name. it will remember who you want to ignore if you bookmark the homepage, eg: "blather.puremango.co.uk?ignore

I'll add other features like who, date view etc if anyone finds it useful. Consider it experimental at the moment. It seems to have a problem with quote marks, for instance. let me know any other bugs you find .

:) It's very cool. I just get "(this entry has been ignored) unignore" whenever someone on my ignore list blathes. I'm very happy with how well it works. It gives those who want to write crap the opportunity to keep writing crap, and those who don't want to read it the opportunity to forcibly ignore it. Everyone's a winner! freedom to express is coupled perfectly with freedom to ignore.

thanks for the comments everyone. jane; yeah, of course it does: tinyurl.com/5ced2m to have it save your ignore list, bookmark: blather.puremango.co.uk/?ignore=joe,jim,dave replacing joe, jim and dave with whoever you want. :privacy: I don't collect any identifiable usage information from this. For instance I sometimes leave my name blank when I don't want anyone to know it's me. You can still do this in blight_2. I *could* amend the code so I can find stuff like that out, and even things like what blathes you've been reading etc etc. But I won't. I promise. I will open the source code up at some point, too. :future: I'll keep tabs on the bandwidth and disk space usage (I'm using a templating system that caches files locally, so we'll see what effect that has). But I don't expect it to use tonnes of resources. If people are still using it regularly in a few weeks, I'll add support for from pages, who blathes etc. I'll add /red support too if there's demand. Any bugs, questions, ideas etc you know where to find me.

:general philosophy: I'm not going to add things like spellcheck, the_wander_button or any major new features to blight_2 - the general philosophy is that blight_2 should be as close to blather.newdream.net as possible. I've even un-fixed the parser so that things like blatrix (mostly) work properly. I may create neoblather.puremango.co.uk with some enhancements at some point. One thing I *have* added to blight_2 is a little link to recent on every blathe - click the top right image. On blather.newdream.net it takes you to the homepage, on mine it take you to recent. I thought that was a neat improvement.

I've Always Found I Could Avoid Reading Anything That Didn't Interest Me Anyway.Sort Of A Self-Censorship Without The Intervention Of Machine Logic. But I'm Kind Of Dumb That Way. Perhaps You Could Find A Way Of Compiling All The Ignored Blathes In A Common Directory. Or Maybe A Rating System Showing Just How Ignored A Skite Has Become. A Badge Of Infamy. Will Any Skite Become A Ghost In The Machine? Invisible To All. If I Ignore My Own Blathes Will I Cease To Be?

nice questions, tourist. I could record most ignored skites. I don't think it would be helpful though. and while normally I am able to just skip over things I don't like to see, there are some things that are hard to ignore.

just curious about something. would it be possible to implement a feature that forces a word wrap if a string of characters goes beyond a certain limit? it would be cool if we could use blight to view blathes that have been page stretched to hell without having to scroll left and right constantly. ...

still thinking about how best to do this; see the font isn't fixed width. Or in other words iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii takes up less room than wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww even though they both use the same number of characters.

Hmmm, maybe just pick one of the larger letters such as "W" and see how many might stretch a page too far for most common screen resolutions and put the limit somewhere just below that? ...

yeah, unfortunately. Unless you can think of a better way? I guess I could do a page where you submit "aliases" such that, and this a purely random example you understand, if I add "daf", and "daffy" as an alias of "dafremen", you only need to block "dafremen" and it'll know to block the other aliases too. But my solution is just to have tinyurl.com/6nvj2r bookmarked - that way I don't need to worry about re-entering all the aliases all the time. If you're thinking more about "21 June 2007" and all of kx21's bajillion aliases, then I'm stumped, really. I could do a thing where you can optionally log in to blight_2 and it will remember your ignore list, and then next to each name on a blathe there's a little link to ignore, which silently adds that skite to your ignore list. So over time you can easily build up a huge list of people to ignore. Or, using the aliases method I mentioned, I could go through a whole bunch of kx21's blathes and try to extract a definative list of his aliases, and then you'd just need to block "kx21" to block (most of) his stuff, too.

doesn't support the "somebody" thing very well - it thinks stuff written by "somebody" was actually written by the person preceding somebody's blathe.
