u24 it's designed for a specific technical purpose (stopping spam) rather than a philosophical purpose.

Check our kittenauth and/or humanauth for a different approach to the technical challenge. not as secure imho.

pSyche Although having a captcha is very useful, seeing as spammers can still get by it, what if blather required the typing of a captcha for every post?
I would find this very bothersome, seeing as sometimes my clumsy fingers cause the cave to crumble.

dafremen I suppose I'll get hated on by some for pointing this out:

The captah should use separate images for each character displayed. Further, it should have several filenames that contain the same character so that the possibilities become practically endless.

All a bot programmer would have to do, is create program that clears his cookies..then goes to "blather" each time, recording the name of the image that appears. At the end, he'd have a list of most if not all possibilities.

Then he would go through, entering the correct response for each image int oa database of responses. Even though not all images might not have been found..his bot simply has to refresh the "do you have words" page until one that IS in his database appears.

Sample database example:

Captcha image:
http://blather.newdream.net/images/captcha/e74c2fe75305ea36fd7f145764ea553e.png
Response: 8TF6

Captcha image: http://blather.newdream.net/images/captcha/08af5f3bf7f194e8ca8b282100fb43d8.png
Response: EVR8

Captcha image:
http://blather.newdream.net/images/captcha/b5bbb529fd60bea37aa98dd63c005da3.png
Response: 6VTG

etc.

Sorry for arming the froob spam bots. OH well. It had to be said so that the process can be improved.

u24 daf; as I think you noticed, the images are cached temporarily and regenerated

m_c; yeah, I wrote an article about that type of attack; puremango.co.uk/cm_breaking_captcha_115.php
it applies to a worrying amount of captchas.

either_way, what we have right now has stopped the spam :)
