i was too inebriated to cry, but i did get goosebumps. watching a crowded bar full of people my age cheering 'like it was the superbowl' every time a state went blue was what really gave me hope. that my generation actually cares and that we helped create history. and damn, is that man a good orator. but the cynic in me can't help but think we'll see how much hope can do in january.

..said the war would lead to “an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs and undetermined consequences.” (appears anti-war but then goes on to say) "..we can safely -redeploy- combat brigades from Iraq at a pace of 1 to 2 brigades a month that would remove them in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 – more than 7 years after the war began. Under the Obama-Biden plan, a residual force will remain in Iraq and in the region to conduct targeted counter-terrorism missions against al Qaeda in Iraq.." http://origin.barackobama.com/issues/iraq/ ..on Afghanistan: "I think one of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job here, focus our attention here. We got distracted by Iraq," he said. Obama said troop levels must increase in Afghanistan. "For at least a year now, I have called for two additional brigades, perhaps three," he told CBS. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/20/obama.afghanistan/index.html ..said Friday "the use of military force should not be taken off the table when dealing with Iran", which he called "a threat to all of us." http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/281249,CST-NWS-OBAMA03.article

Q: Teenage boys must register for selective service at age 18, but not girls. I'm wondering whether this sends the right message about national service? ..should the country examine registering women at 18? OBAMA: Yes. Every young person should have that opportunity to serve and do something that is bigger than themselves. http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Barack_Obama_Homeland_Security.htm

he's tough, he won't be walked over -- but the thing about military service is more about "giving everybody a chance" to make contributions to their community, a value he seems to hold in high regard. i'm going to feel guilty over these next 4-8 years if i don't go into teaching math or science since i'll feel like I won't be doing my part. the military service for women is similar.

did any of us really think that the war would end on january 20th? did any of us really think, that though bush has done much to destroy our world image, that the rest of the world doesn't expect us to police volatile and dangerous nations? did any of us really think that obama didn't support fighting terrorists? and do any of us really oppose finding osama bin laden and punishing him for the attacks he orchestrated against this country? come on now people. we all know obama's campaign slogan was all about change, but it will not be drastic liberal change. the president has to take the middle road and work with congress. we do remember checks and balances in this country right? we do remember the constitution right? we do remember why democracy was founded in the first place right? for all of us socialists, the world will never be a just place. the power of human greed and ignorance is unimaginable. you can't reasonably expect one man that is inheriting a slow, bumbling, corrupt system to snap his fingers and make it all better. and you can't reasonably expect your interpretation of a campaign slogan to become immediate reality. it is ironic to me all the people that have bashed obama for believing in change. true, it won't be anything drastic, but at this point i'll be happy with a bunch of small little changes to put us a little more left of right field. crying about how partisan politics sucks isn't changing anything either. and for real, we all know politicians make promises they can't keep. that's part of the definition of being a politician in the first place. (and if we are going to cry and clamor for equality then it really should be in all things including the right to die for your country...although the fact that i have to pay more for health care just because i have a uterus, the uterus tax, should count for some kind of exemption shouldn't it?)

.."and for real, we all know politicians make promises they can't keep. that's part of the definition of being a politician in the first place." Makes me wonder why we continue to pay for their much higher standards of living.. Seems the more things seem to "change", the more we don't mind if they stay the same.

'ironic' that he picked a liberal to be his chief of staff? not really; just proves the 'politicians say one thing on the campaign trail and do another once they get elected' theory. am i particularly disappointed in this instance? no, not really.

has wasted too much time trying to play nice with republicans who were only ever out to try and fuck him over from the word "go" when the republicans had the white house and clear legislative majorities, they did as they saw fit and didn't bother trying to "reach across the aisle"...they used their numbers as a bully-pulpit and acheived as much of their agenda as the public was willing to let them You can't try to deal in good faith with people who have shown time and again that their only notion of bipartisanship is the other party caving in and giving them what they want. the prospect of the Repubs taking back the house after they largely fucked us into this mess is proof that both Mencken and Barnum may well have been the prophets of their era
