I'm feeling like a really patriotic pobody today. We're celebrating Canada Day here--136 years as a country. And what a fantastic day! The sun was shining and and there was this gentle breeze...oh,it was just lovely. :) Tonight I watched a program about our national flag that was really interesting. It was all about why we needed one,and the events leading up to finally having one. They showed some of the early designs--some were sort of funky--and some were just plain ugly! hehe! The end design was/is so simplistic, but you wouldn't believe all the years of fussing and fighting that went on before a final choice was made. I don't think I'll ever look at a Canadian flag the same way again. I saw the news programs today and got all emotional seeing people become Canadian citizens, and laughed when I saw the goofy(but fun)hats and other patriotic stuff people were wearing. Some people think that Canada should just join with the U.S. and become one country. I hope that day never happens. It would break my heart. For indeed, there really is "no place like home". Happy Birthday Canada. I love you. *kiss* :) P.S. Here's hoping you win the Olympic bid tomorrow.

a couple other versions: O Canada! Our fathers' land of old Thy brow is crown'd with leaves of red and gold. Beneath the shade of the Holy Cross Thy children own their birth No stains thy glorious annals gloss Since valour shield thy hearth. Almighty God! On thee we call Defend our rights, forfend this nation's thrall, Defend our rights, forfend this nation's thrall. O Canada! in praise of thee we sing; From echoing hills our anthems proudly ring. With fertile plains and mountains grand With lakes and rivers clear, Eternal beauty, thos dost stand Throughout the changing year. Lord God of Hosts! We now implore Bless our dear land this day and evermore, Bless our dear land this day and evermore. O Canada, our heritage, our love Thy worth we praise all other lands above. From sea to see throughout their length From Pole to borderland, At Britain's side, whate'er betide Unflinchingly we'll stand With hearts we sing, "God save the King", Guide then one Empire wide, do we implore, And prosper Canada from shore to shore. aaaaaaaaaaaand some extra verses of the english version for ya... : 1. O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. 2. O Canada! Where pines and maples grow. Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow. How dear to us thy broad domain, From East to Western Sea, Thou land of hope for all who toil! Thou True North, strong and free! God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. 3. O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise, To keep thee steadfast through the years From East to Western Sea, Our own beloved native land! Our True North, strong and free! God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. 4. Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer, Hold our dominion within thy loving care; Help us to find, O God, in thee A lasting, rich reward, As waiting for the Better Day, We ever stand on guard. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. lots of national anthem goodness

and more french anthem... 1. O Canada!

Ah, nostalgia. I remember when a-g and I were teenagers and we "translated" this bit of the French anthem Et ta valeur, de foi trempée, Protégera nos foyers et nos droits into And your value, twice dipped Protects our fireplaces and our fingers. (She's still around, though not under that name: we went to the jazz festival downtown this afternoon and some people were holding flags, but the atmosphere was more jazz and less Canada.)

Or, via a misheard "une poupée," we could have a doll of the most glittery adventures. Yup, time to Disney-Princess this up. Because Disney Princess is now a verb (but only with the hyphen).
