i am in photography class right now [independent study] and i can't seem to come up with any *good* ideas. so... have any? maybe just some general thing that i should go around and take pictures off...or collages with a theme [any theme]...or absolutely anything. it's the +what+ i need... and i thought it would be neat to include blather in my project this semester. any random ideas? even just a word...

Many photo classes start off shooting black and white. This is a good idea because it forces you to learn what it is that makes up a good picture - without leaning on color as a crutch. The idea here is that if you take away color, you should still have a powerful image. You probably already know this, but i mention it because it may have a bearing on your subject choice. As a subject, i'd recommend selecting one or two elements of composition, such as texture or pattern. Find pattern images that speak to you. Glass windows, stacked boards, rocks, anything with a pattern and then look for the unusual element withing the pattern. Focus in on that. Same for texture, contrast, or form. I personally enjoy the juxtaposition of old and new - occasionally sepia toning the old section while leaving the new in cool tones. Cartier Bresson chose 'the decisive moment' for his theme - waiting for that instant in time when all the pieces fell together to best tell a story. Good luck and i hope you post some pieces where we can see them :-) ³

Thank you all! cube, this is my 7th photo class in the past 2 years which is why i've been having some trouble coming up with ideas :) i've been doing black and white for all of my classes and i'd like to start doing some colour along with the black and white.

If you insist... I've had this idea for color for a long time and while i've grabbed a few shots once in a while, i don't know of anyone who has explored it in depth. The idea is based on color temperatures - shooting multiple light sources in the same frame. An example would be street lights against a setting sun. Very tricky stuff because getting the exposure right for good color saturation is a must. You'd have to bracket like crazy. This isn't likely to appeal to every taste, but then, i'm a technophreak :-) ³

Ohh...a challenge! ;) That's very interesting, I might have to give it (or a version of it) a try.

Take an ordinary object and photograph it in unusual places. For example, take an egg and place it on the ledge outside the ticket booth window of a movie theater. You could even have the ticket seller looking at it with an expression of "what the hell is an egg doing on the ledge outside my ticket booth window?" Next, take the egg and put it in the middle of the road. Photograph low to the ground with pedestrians approaching. You could go into a grocery store and put the egg next to the frozen chickens. An egg in a cat's food dish. An egg with a beautiful sunset. You could use something other than an egg, of course. That's what just popped into my head.

Take pictures of despair For ex: Empty trashy ally ways Or a homeless person pushing a cart Dirty-blistered barefeet A basketball net made of chain Some one sitting in the corner of a closet giving you their most depressed expression Whatever you get the idea Or taking the egg idea in another direction, just put ordinary things wear they don’t belong, like putting the phone upside down on its cradle or a golf ball in your salad *Shrugz* ok maybe those aren’t good ideas but I'm sure what ever you come up w/ will be great

Hey! Try something w/ shadows and Sill-ah-wets (Sorry bout the spelling) Or try something w/ lampshades Like ppl wearing lamp shades Heck lamp shades are quite versatile put them on anything, upside down right side up it doesn’t matter, just make sure its not a boring plane lamp shade kuz than that’s no fun.

try taking photos at night, in REALLY dark places (use 400 speed film) That way, you can only really see a little bit in the dark. I did this and it really helped with my composition.

shoes. i saw the coolest picture today, and it was a bunch of people's shoes that were standing on different levels on a riser, and it was just neat. we were talking about going around and taking pictures of people's feel, and i think you should go around and take pictures of people's legs and shoes. ^-^

Actually, last year we were assigned to do a documentary of Rochester, and I chose to do shoes. It didn't turn out very well but I got a few good pictures that went into my final project.
