fyi, my theory... everytime you blather, the blather engine recreates the html file using a database somewhere when the blather engine goes haywire (either from too many hits or something else) it spits out partial or empty html files when you click on the blathe you want to see, you are directed to the html files, so therefore old blathes, that have not been touched by the haywire engine will be fine, while the newly generated partial/empty files will not display properly this is all really one geek's guess, not that anyone really gives 2 shits (waits for someone to steal his lunch money and stuff him in a locker)

probably there is no database involved. blather is just using cgi to call perl scripts that re-write the HTML files on the fly. when you click "blather" you are getting a lock on that file, opening it for write, adding your text and the related HTML to the bottom, closing and saving, and releasing the lock on the file. just my guess, but this would be an easy (and fairly low tech/cheap) way to do make blather do what it does. The back door into viewing old blathes still works because you are doing an end run around the perl/cgi and just asking for the web page directly from the server. My guess is the the current blathes had been locked, and so could not be viewed, and a blank page was returned instead?

if you go directly to the letter's directory to browse, you will see that the "white screen" blathes are 0 bytes, which would support my theory the only way to have recovered the past data is if it was stored somewhere, like a database, or perhaps a different hidden file then again, what do i know, i've only been here for a couple of weeks

files can be backed up, just like a database. I'll admit, that's probably not likely, though. my guess that pages are being locked while someone tries to write, and the file system is showing the locked pages as "blank" while others try to access them. It might also be happening when to users "race" for the same page. Either way, when the request finishes, or the user gives up waiting, the page goes back to normal. I could be wrong, but the format of blather isn't really condusive to a database - what is the "data", and how would you structure it? I think we should fix blather the old fashion way. Just squirt some ethanol down the carburator, get it drunk on bourbon, and the drive it at 110 mph down a country road at night with no headlights. That usually clears things up for me.

I was playing blather tester, and here is what happened: you know sometimes when you click "blather" the page hangs for a long time? During that time, I tried to access the page from another browser. I did not get a white screen, but I did get broken HTML, which changed as I hit refresh. The complete page loaded and was fine and not broken when the first browser finally finished. This would also explain how pages seem to go blank and then fix themselves. You are probably seeing the page when the script has just started to re-write it, but is hung. The webserver knows there is an HTML file there, but the script has not actually written anything that can be recognized by the web browser. I think the problems happen when, because of *insert your theory here*, the blather hardware not being able to run the cgi scripts as fast as usual. At the same time people keep hammering away, trying to see pages or post to pages, which just makes the system even slower. maybe someone set off a fork_bomb, and the hardware resources have been hosed with process that's become an out of control memory hog ? okay, I'm done geeking out.

I was about to say that! Just kidding. My theory is that, since we already have blather blue and blather_red, this is blather white. And the text is white too. It's a zen thing.

hmm. so now we just have to blather to every page from /a/ to /j/jon.html. or possibly run rebuild.pl (but I wouldn't want to take that risk without closely examining the code first) .
