comes from me rambling in a_buddha if you pare back far enough each of the stories in each of the religions anywhere in the world i think you get the same story over and over. and that's probably to story behind humanity. not in a divine way or anything, just there is a driving need in humans to tell stories - religion, myth, books, tv, movies, the net, a driving need that makes us who we are. today, right now, i am convinced that it is the same arcetypal story, over and over, trying to manifest itself in our lifes in our words. and if we listened hard enough we just might hear it. and it might drive us mad or closer to the gods closer to god and maybe madness is just being closer to gods if we listen hard enough we might just hear the truth. not a religious truth or a human truth but The Truth. the bible spouts in it's terribly snobbish way 'in the beginging was the word... and the word was god' and i think i have found references in other religions, but i have misplaced them just on this moment. but i wonder if maybe this whole thing is jsut built on this one, lonely word trying to get itself heard.

maybe -most- religions are one religion.. there's got to be one that really doesn't have the same moral base as everything else.. (but that's just me being picky and awkward) it's like the same story is being told in many different languages.

i agree...the fundamentals for all major book-religions at least are esentially the same: one God, thou shalt not kill/covet/adultery-fy/cheat/lie/steal/get intoxicated, etc...i dont see why everyone makes such a FUSS over religion, we're all really trying to be 'good' in the same way.

even in most polytheistic religions there is the notion of one god being the most powerful and the creator, but he either falls out of power, doesnt care about the universe anymore, or otherwize is no longer an influence (called original_monotheism ). the jews (and therefor christians and muslims) just had that one stay in charge.

many religions talk about all_religions_are_one_religion. only some people don't think they are real religions. they accuse these new age people of being atheist. that bothers me. but i've had a good experience with the Unitarian and Religious Science beliefs. it's not religion, but spirituality.

check out http://www.swagga.com/rasta.htm while it certainly does have many similarities in it's code of ethics, there are a few distinct differences. but I don't think it's so far removed from other religions that it can be called unrecognisably different. -I'll keep searching :)

A Catholic Clergyman whose name escapes me was lured unsuccessfully into a war of semantics. He was asked the question, "You believe that your God is the One, True God, correct?" "Yes," he replied. "And so the Allah of the Muslims is a false god?" "No, he is the same god." "Ah, but they have it wrong. You are more correct than they, for if they were more correct, you would be worshipping thier god, being a rational man." The clergyman stopped for a moment, and then spoke: "We stand at the edges of a vast, circular ballroom. In the center, suspended from the ceiling, is the most beautiful chandelier ever created. It not only provides light and heat, it also allows us to see one another, and interact as equals. Each of us, where we stand, see a different aspect of that same chandelier. None is more correct than the other. We choose to view that part of the chandelier, because that aspect is pleasing to us, or actually more pleasing than any other part." "Oh, and what of those who do not believe in God?" "Then there are some who choose to not look at the light at all."

those of us who do not believe that there is a "God" see "the lighted chandelier" for what it is An ornament manufactured with wires and electricity affixed to a shiny precious metals that were molded into the proper shape that would be most applealing to the people who looked upon it. When you realize that you can look away from the chandelier and it won't kill you, you realize that it's safe to go outside again and feel the warmth and light of natural sunlight. That's when you realize that the darkness is simply called nightime and in a few hours the part of the earth that you're standing on will rotate around and face the sun again. no magic. no fear. it's simply the natural order of things that we all sprang from, so we're adapted to find the colors and shapes of nature beautiful in the same way a baby will find even the ugliest of women beautiful if she happens to be it's mother.

a funny thing about all_religions_are_one_religion is that a lot of the religions don't believe that so in saying they're all valid, you're kinda invalidating their claims to specialness and being the One True Religion

i could be flippant, wave a hand airly around and say - well, they dont think i am /my lifestyle / what i believe in / what i do is valid, why should i extend them the same couresy? but instead, i'll answer seriously. to take on board their claim that Their Religion Is The Only religion, that only looks at the surface of their claims. i am diving underneath, peeling the potatoes of all the religions i can think of, discarding the skins, those surface claims they make, and looking at the bare bones. forgive me if my metaphores meld, its early. so it doesnt bother me that this might be a form of invalidation, because this theory itself is a herisy of the largest kind.
