life in my own room is like this every day. under the blankets, though i'm breathing softly and smiling to know that there's more to this than meets the eye.

I didn't start out invisible, obviously. I was mostly regular, like you. I had it made- a compatible wife, a daughter. We’d work on another child when work schedules and finances permitted. What led to it randomly was just uneasiness one weeknight. After dinner, my daughter watched Sweet Sixteen on MTV while my wife read tabloids. "Did you know blahblah had a brother who killed someone while sleepwalking?" she said, not looking up. "How would ever know you sleepwalked if you always returned to bed?" "I don't know, honey. There must be some way to test it. A camera or something. At least he was sleeping, people do the same fully awake and aware” The conversation put me in strange moods. I decided to look through old dusty photo albums (damn dust, like grave worms, settles even when you leave something closed and alone). The pictures were people growing and smiling and sleepy and opening presents and weddings and funerals. They seemed flat, like stale seven-up. But there was a picture of my uncle where I felt him a kindred spirit in how he wore a hat. Next to the picture was where I found a scrap that said, in his handwriting, “invisibility spell.” On the other side: “say it now my baby.” The words were Neil Diamond lyrics, not arcane Latin. As a lark, while walking to work, I thought I’d try my invisibility out. “Say it now” etc. I stepped in front of a truck a good way off. It didn’t slow; it didn’t honk. No perceivable swerve. Then it hit me. Hard. Overwhelming sensation hard. Lying there I’m having a thought I suppose is my last: It wasn’t the best way to test it, for I, you, or the other guy... but what choice did we have?”
