greta, kathy and i went to loews waterfront to see "sideways" but it was sold out so we went to the forward ave. theatre and saw "enduring love." filmed in the english countyside, london, and oxford. the opening scene with the hot air balloon is unbelievably real and full of unexpected, gripping, out of control terror. the story goes on to show how all who were part of the experience are affected by it. well filmed with amazing shots, a thoughful, philosophical screenplay that challenges why we love and creepy as hell suspense.

Moulin Rouge. I know you may not think much of it, but I watched this last night. I think I was at a stage where it really affected me. It even made me cry, which isn’t something you see every day. It isn’t even something I see everyday. Anyway, it was totally inspirational and touched a nerve so that it will leave its tracks in my mind for quite a long time.

the machinist christian bale lost sixty pounds to play this dostoevsky-like character that will easily get him an oscar nomination. his soul descends into madness, plagued by a haunting, mysterious element which robs him of his ability to eat and sleep. he becomes delusional and paranoid and it is our task as the audience to figure out what is real and what is his psychosis. it was a noir horror/thriller shot in a creepy sepia film tone with a musical score that crawls and slithers under your skin. it's spooky and mesmerizing and not until the end do you actually "get it." to see this skeleton man is both shocking and sad, especially when you realize what it is that gave him such emotional and physchological torment. when all the loose ends get tied up at the finale then you can understand how devastating and life effecting our wrong choices can turn out to be. don't miss it.

finding neverland the story behind the story of peter pan with the mature johnny depp as j.m. barrie. an engrossing tale of love, sacrafice, and imagination that made me weep for the power of connecting reality with fantasy. my favorite scenes are in the park when barrie dances with his dog and we get to see inside his thoughts where the dog really is a bear at a vintage circus. also, when barrie and the real boy, peter, are sitting on the bench at the end and his eyes are swollen with tears. you can see depp praising the little boy's performance, yet it fits amazingly well into the scene.

moolaade' official selection at cannes, toronto, new york, chicago, and telluride film festivals the story of one woman from a tribe in senegal who stands up against "purification," the male idea that a girl must undergo genital mutilation (female circumcision) at puberty to become a bride. it is also an amazing look at the west african culture, the warmth and generosity of spirit in village life, the outside influence of the french, islam, and the breakdown of the patriarchal hiearchy through female liberation for the advancement and development of society. ousmane sembene's camera made me a willing participant. i could almost feel the orange dust on my feet, taste the welcome water, and absorb the tears of the mother whose little girl bled to death. his award winning film is an unflinching look at a serious subject, but it is carefully infused with a humor and pathos that filled me with exhilaration. -wassa, wassa, wassa!... -wassa, wassa, wassa!...

"the realms of the unreal" an award winning documentary about the life of reclusive artist henry darger, who was a lonely janitor for a catholic hospital in chicago. he spent solitary time in his apartment creating a 65,000 page novel and several 1o' long paintings that he created from thousands of collected images and fotocopies of children from newspapers, books, and magazines to illustrate it. his art was a lifelong project that explored his unbridled imagination and captured the raw, visceral pain of his tortured childhood, the loss of his parents, the years of his neglect suffered in a home for feeble-minded children, his fractured view of society, his inner battles with god, and his desire to shelter children from evil. his art went virtually unknown until his death in 1973 when it was discovered by his landlord. and that's not even scratching the surface of this provocative, soul-stirring gem of a film. kathy and i had an amazing conversation on the way home from the regent square theatre, talking about our own broken childhoods and how we grew up dealing with them in various ways and still do.

the_nightmare_before_christmas i love this film. love it. watch it, tim burton's mind is the scariest, funniest, wittiest, most childlike and the cleverest stage for such characters as Jack Skellington, that weird doctor thing, Oogie Boogie and Sandy Claws to romp round in. Seriously. Watch it. I haven't seen Corpse Bride yet, it looks similar but i want to watch it. It has only just come out in England very recently and i forgot last night that i was supposed to be seeing it with my boyfriend. (Instead i was getting merry in a drag bar listening to the paper faces remix of filthy_gorgeous.) Girl_Interrupted is also a classic, you should read the book too. (same with the aforementioned fight_club). Series_7_The_Contenders is a little-known, one off kind of film that i feel you can only ever see once. Interesting take on reality tv, wish i could re-enact it lol. Secretary - a sadist-masochist love story, basically. i thought this film was powerful, and a favourite of many people i know. Run_Lola_Run i really enjoyed, classic. American_Beauty is similar to eternal_sunshine in my mind, as i feel they both have such a dramatic impact on the viewer. Amelie - i saw this film at my best friend's house, ironically meeting my now-boyfriend for the first time when we watched this. Special, quietly moving film. mr_and_mrs_smith - like you need a reason other than the leading man and lady to watch this. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt? Come on, this film was so made for the bisexuals. *leers at screen* party_monster - the film itself is another one i don't think is up to repeated watchings. I like the music, and the people in it are fab, and i felt that it looked inside my head perfectly and splashed my ideals over the clubs and showed the world what it really means to live fast. Right up until the overdoses and deaths. But hey, live fast, die young. awwwww i can't think of any more at the moment, i will later. (again) get watching, skites.

kundun a rather accurate and stunning recreation of the dalai lama's first autobiography, from the time he was discovered at 4 years old til the time he left tibet in 1959; i believe he was about 24. i cry everytime i watch it. and the beginning is absolutely adorable; the dalai lama readily admits what a brat he was when he was a child. plus, it's a martin scorsese (sp) film, so you really can't go wrong.

"tenshi no tamago" (angel's egg) unlike anything else i've ever seen in the field of anime, or any other genre of film for that matter. there's very little dialogue, but that just makes it easier to focus on the stunning imagery. especially if you're like me and tend to stay away from english dubs (though this film doesn't have one, and the only way to get a dvd with english subtitles is to head over to ebay, so it's kind of a moot point). to say it isn't for everyone is an understatement, but i think it's one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen. the fact that it was drawn entirely by hand is pretty staggering. i have a fair amount of anime titles in my collection i still haven't watched (including "serial experiments: lain" and some of miyazaki's work), mostly because i just haven't made my way around to them yet. "grave of the fireflies" is one i've intentionally been avoiding, though. i have a feeling that one will be more than a little depressing to watch, and i haven't figured out how best to go about approaching it yet.

i've seen that film! (pan's labyrinth) it's quite dark, i think. very good. i would recommend 'mirrormask'...it's like a twisted fairytale, very very good. also human traffic....can't believe nobody's said it. it is the ultimate clubbing film. the weekend has landed! all that exists now are clubs, drugs, pubs and parties. the milkybars are on me!

ah should really have reread this blather before posting........crOwl's beating me to all the best ones....like mirror mask and pan's labyrinth. good taste there my friend. i'm a major fan of christian bale...American Psycho is excellent, and i thought he was very good in Equilibrium too. I was very shocked to hear him in an interview clip on YouTube without an American accent. He seems to be able to take on any accent perfectly. Legend. Battle Royale is a good film. Set in Japan, it depicts a chilling insight into a world where the children have no respect for anyone or anything and so the Battle Royale act is brought in for one random class of children....they are given the order of killing their classmates. don't want to spoil the plot so i'll stop there.

terry gilliam's "tideland" whoa...one of the best things about this film that has been ridiculed and crapped on by critics is the beginning when gilliam explains why he made it. he made it for himself... i loved it. i have never seen someone capture the innocent imagination of a child so well. sure, it deals with some questionable issues that give it reasonable license to be judged harshly, but the fact that it was made for personal conviction gives it a just liberty somehow...if we can't do that, then what is art?

lars and the real girl kathy and i were supposed to meet hil and corey, but we were running late from hanging out at alex and marina's birthday party so we sat down in the squirrel theatre just as it was starting. turns out they were even later than us and were the two silhouettes walking down the aisle after we sat down in the back. other than some people laughing at inappropriate places, i totally enjoyed it...yeah, it's funny at first when the doll arrives and the family and town is reacting to it...but when lars starts to heal from the pains of his childhood and tells his shrink that bainca is dying...ok, it's time to get weepy. get it and stop laughing, already.

i'm not there todd haynes; director i never was a dylan fan. his voice irritated me for some reason when i was coming of age, but this film has made me want to see martin scorsese's "no direction home" to get an even clearer, definitive picture of this artist, musician, and master of disguise. what an honor it must be to have someone make a film about your ability to reinvent yourself... while you're still alive...of the six actors that play dylan's personas, cate blanchett is easily the best, but ben whishaw is my favorite because he looks and talks like corey, my daughter hilary's boyfriend. the scenes when a scraggly, bespeckled richard gere rides into a gloom/doom/end of the world, minstrel town and jim james of my morning jacket sings with a clownish white face are eerily stunning as are the psychedelic/black tarantula crawling on a white wall scenes in nyc when dylan is dumping edie sedgwick...oh yeah...go see it.

"Sublime" You'll most likely find it in the "horror" section, though it is sort of mislaid there as it is a rather odd psychodrama which borrows a few horror conventions, but to good use. Without spoiling too much i will say that it reminded me a little bit of "Jacob's Ladder" but i won't sell it short by leaving it at that Fear, Mortality, perception, and dreams as they relate to who are we and how we define ourselves. "the dark fucking unknown" i can't describe this movie coherently, it does not quite work that way. but what a ride.

Atonement. I heard reviews praising the likeness of the film with novel - and wondered - why is this praiseworthy? After thinking no more on this quandary until I arrived at the cinema - it suddenly occurred to me that if this film was going to be true to the novel it would have to be good. (I maintain that Mr McEwen’s novels will be remembered as highpoints, if not pinnacles of our generations produce. "Saturday" is talked about in my local pub by otherwise, almost, bookless drinkers. “On Chesil Beach” remains my touchstone when relationships waver.) It was. It was much better than good. Likeness or otherwise to the novel aside it was an exceptional film. Paced precisely with a inseparable, metronomic soundtrack to hypnotise and lead. It is tightly focused AND broad in view. It is layered in not so much content – then vary definitely in view – the crowning embodiment of the novels theme. The film is populated by divine and viscous actors - their visual loveliness alone could hold me captive. And then, they ACTED, and then, I was putty in their hands. I don’t get to the cinema often. My film viewing is, in the main, confined to rented DVDs or public broadcast TV selections. I am ecstatic that this was the film that broke my cinema attendance drought. It is a personal film. Watch it alone.

4 months 3 weeks and 2 days The best film I have seen in a very long time. I have never been so involved and tense throughout an entire film like this one. No special effects and no music and this film carried more emotion than the greatest tragedy. It is very real. The acting is so incredible that you forget that you are watching a movie. It feels like its really happening.I can not give away anything and I believe that you should go see it with knowing as little about it as possible and by reading as little reviews as possible. Let yourself become consumed and lost in this film. It will take you far away away.

"paris, texas". i just watched it again recently, for the first time in two or three years. i'd forgotten so many things about it. it's a very slow film...for some people i'm sure sitting through it would be an agonizing, dull experience. but i still think it's one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen. even watching it with people who were throwing in occasional snarky asides didn't hamper the experience for me. i don't think harry dean stanton has ever had another lead role (he's always been more of a "character actor"), but this is the part he was born to play. and the child who plays his son is amazing. i was stunned to learn that a few of his most interesting passages of dialogue were entirely improvised. children really do have remarkable minds. the scene that always gets to me the most is when travis meats hunter outside of school, and they walk across the street from one another, hunter mimicking the way travis is walking, even when he trips over a garbage can in the middle of the sidewalk. and then they finally walk onto the street and meet one another halfway, walking the rest of the way home together. i don't know why this little scene resonates with me so deeply, but i could watch it over and over again and never tire of it. i think part of it is ry cooder's slide guitar.
