What a bloated myth society has fed us. It is a fool's dream and a road to emotional hell. And yet...the desire...the desire is there. It can't be shaken. Damn tradition.

in the dream, my mother and i are seated at the counter of a diner, on the spinney stools. we order food and when it arrives, it is the smallest of serving sizes, given to us on a single plate to share, all three courses: appetizer, main dish, dessert. we look at the plate in disbelief, and then we look at each other wordlessly, and then we look at our server and nod our acceptance. we pretend that this is enough to satisfy the hunger within us when i know that it won't. i have married a version of my father; i know what awaits me.

it's so stupid what people spend on weddings, he spat. i mean, just this weekend i'm driving out to give my marquee lettering — it says love — to someone's wedding and they're paying me $350. just to drop off fucking letters! oh god, do people even love their spouses after ten years? a woman with a blinging ring griped. it's more like like after that point. it's more like tolerate after ten years, another woman countered. if you can make it to ten years and still like, i think you're alright, the first woman said. tolerating one another comes after ten years! i guess i could buy two more letters and offer more options, the man yukked.
