in twenty three minutes or so I will be 21. I'm not much of a drinker so I guess that doesn't really mean much of anything

You could call up your mother, and point out the results of unprotected sex. And how expensive it all can be. But that would probably be the last time you got any money in your birthday card from her,

heh. thanks. I'm 21 and a day now. The only thing different is that, from now on, my birthdays only mean i'm older. I think this is when the downhill starts. hehe.

my sister's...today. she's 11. she wanted everyone together for her birthday. so my mom came over here, and slept on the couch. she didn't want to, but she did it anyway. she has to be here tonight again for dinner. and on sunday with all of her in-laws. sometimes i wish there was a button i could push to make everything better, just for a little while.

An afternoon spent with my family pouring over old photos, remembering myself before today, now 26. An evening spent driving home through the city where I grew up, music and wind guiding me through sleepy hollow to my home in another city. A morning spent quietly celebrating another birthday in the warm pyjamas mom gave me yesterday, curled up next to the family birthday cards.

still months away. but the more time that passes, the more these feel like just another day. even the marking time aspect gets blurred. a number climbs a ladder, the ladder is pulled away, and as legs flail wildly, a new number appears wearing a three-piece suit, hair perfectly coiffed. we'll see how well-put-together it is this time next year, after it's lived a little.

Happy 80th, Leonard Cohen. May your gentle growly voice, cool hat, and funny-to-sad-in-five-seconds mood swings live long and prosper. My mother and brother's birthday were both in August. She turned 60, and my uncle - her brother - got her a card saying she was 80. My brother turned 24, and I wanted to write something in mock-archaic English for my local King Arthur mythos fanboy, so I wrote on the card TO A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS REACHED THE ADVANCED AGE OF TWO SCORE AND FOUR YEARS. Turns out "score" means twenty years, not ten, so I inadvertently turned him 44. Ah well. I should've known that.

Oh, and I forgot the oldest feeding_the_poor_with_dandelion_leaves volunteer's birthday! (That isn't a great name for the weekly meal because anyone can come, they don't have to show any papers at the door, and there aren't usually dandelion leaves. But now is a good season for them again - they're good in the spring and fall. In summer they tend to be thicker and more bitter. But anyway.) Her name's Louise and she turned 90; I was there a couple of weeks ago with my family - kind of pushed to the side since she had so much family and people who were more important to her, but that's okay. I counted about 90 people - children, grandchildren, and a couple of great-grands.

Silly unclear modifiers. It sounds like I said people are thicker and more bitter in the summer. Thicker in the winter, perhaps, but are people usually more bitter then, too? Maybe if they're particularly light-sensitive. A friend of mine who doesn't have SAD seasonal affective disorder still genuinely hates winter. So add temperature-sensitive to reasons for bitterness. Ah modifiers. Modify me always.

happy birthday, blather. You're older, but are you wiser? Are you more jaded, or cynical? Rather I think, you are unchanging. I know you, Blather. You move on, ceaseless, with or without me. Despite that, I celebrate this paltry little thing to feel connected. Sometimes it scares me, realizing you might be here, carrying my voice and that of others, long after I am gone.

(Now Louise and Leonard Cohen are both dead and there's no mural of Louise with her hand on her heart for someone in morphology class to see while looking_out_the_window.)
