I’d forgotten what it is to wake in the dark without dreams or songs or whispers to clear the fog of troubled sleep. How strange it is to be alone. Not safe in solitude, but adrift in the isolation of a static silence that won’t be broken. When I was small there must have been nights when I called out from the frantic circle of my bed for someone, someone to shine light in the eyes of the haunted hungry, the waiting ones, and scare them back to their earthy dens. I must have cried, soundlessly, terror dripping down my cheeks, until someone crashed pots and pans and the demons ran and breakfast came hot to the table. Now I am the hunter, weak and unskilled, my arrow tips knapped from the flint of my soft resolve. When the first light came through the cracks in the blinds, and you were somewhere cold and unreachable, panic was the sun that rose in my chest and burned my breath from my lungs. I called out in a strangled croak, became a crow with wings of silk and sorrow, flew high enough to see the world spread out below me, so many lives spilled carelessly over the ground. And I wondered then, if my call went unanswered, who I would be.
