shy. the use of restraint to overcome the difficulties. way too sensitive. given a hard time for being shy... using restraint to overcome the difficulties, and succeeding. grown good at using restraint to actively help people reach. knock it, cause me pain, and you're giving me fuel to overcome... 10 for receptivity and 0 for expression. don't knock it! totally masochistic method. i don't enjoy it... except i LOVE the progress.

we were driving to the theatre to see big fish and rain turned to snow only on snake hill road. we rode along this bianca strada and the snow stopped. but tim burton's adventure was just beginning. thank god for artists who can tell stories as if they were our lives.

i play a small plastic recorder to the goats these days, when i'm feeding them and shit. it's nice to get out of the blowing snow. they like the music, as if i'm a goatherd.

we're having a crisis with a young female physics prof dying of cancer at my school right now. i want to say, do all you can. but i feel more like we mostly have to work with the universe as positively as we can, by pumping up the spirit of the school. i'm holding an acorn shell in my pocket that i picked up the night of the eclipse. i feel like we've been laid to waste by a fight of some sorts, but my organism is geared to take that knowledge to gain a sense of which fight is the good one, the one that leads us all up. (and then down again to do our work.)

winter sets in...maybe not outside but I can feel winter coming inside me. That annual change when I can feel layers piling on. Not that light feeling that summer brings. Memories of coldplay in my car on the way to work...my breath bleeding through my homemade scarf fogging up the windshield. Memories of Burlington. My first winter here...and second. Now my first in the new house. I can feel winter coming...cold yet insulated.

"i get a little warm in my heart when i think of winter" i love the winter, everything feels so much more alive. maybe not alive so much as active. things are happening. it's sudden, abrupt. summer and spring lazily roll into view, but winter just happens. as soon as you notice the leaves start to turn orange, you know that soon there'll be a day when suddenly, you realise it's not autumn anymore, but winter.

we went to watch a hockey game, my colleagues and i (work and school). a fiercely political debate took place. no one won. as a democrat, in the purest sense (as a proponent of democracy and diversity of opinion) we both won. friends after a bitter debate. i was given another friend's number, in a way that was both suggestive and not at the same time. i'll call her tomorrow in any case. the cold, and our sport, brings us together.

the other day it was a balmy -5. with the transit strike approaching day 50, i've been using the canal as a road. it's warmer and faster than walking most of the time (not to mention a hell of a lot more fun too). but, when the temperature rises above -10 an army of quasi-tourists descend on the canal, in preparation for when the real tourists start coming for winterlude in a few weeks. as a result i realized how fast i can skate (it's easier to feel like you're going fast when you're passing dozens of people than when you're the only one stupid enough to be skating in -30 degree weather), and almost ran into a number of people who decided to show off and hit a crack in the ice and tumbled quite spectacularly. smooth.

I said it was winter! Well, it feels like winter already, since the ground is covered in a sheet of snow. Oh, true north strong and bright. High reflectivity partly makes up for the reduced light this time o' year.

you look out the window and see nothing but snow and bare trees, and some small snowshoe tracks in the distance. you can hear only a faint sound of birdsong. you can feel the stillness in the air. you can breathe out.
