epitome of incomprehensibility For the first time since the pandemic, I was in the driveway of my neighbour David's house (the other David, the teenage David). I talked to his mother. Between her and her husband, they have four dogs.

Spice was the only dog out at first. He growled at me, but then out came Fawn: she's smaller, six months old, hyper. They barked and chased and wrestled in a play fight while David and his mother engaged in bitter argument. Physically non-violent, but not play at all. Or maybe a little play, since they played it down in my presence, but you could tell they weren't happy with each other.

They're both decent people, as far as I know, so it was a bit sad to see them angry. But then, what parent/child relationship doesn't have conflict sometimes?

Maybe that's why the dog Spice was stressed out at first. It wasn't just that Strange Person went into his territory, but that Familiar People were radiating tension. I don't think I'm being fanciful to think dogs can sense those sort of things. I mean, they're not mind readers, but tone of voice and gesture readers? Certainly.

e_o_i Ah! I'd forgotten that their other dog was called Spice. Trust blather to preserve memories that fall through the holes in my mental cheese.

Anyway, my parents are getting a dog, as I mentioned in "Shiloh," and I'm too old to throw a tantrum - but why am I so wary of change? Embrace the change. Take it for walks. Feed it treats, but not too many.
