simple. It is the quality of communication. now do something with yourself and communicate something meaningful...or...not...but if you won't, well don't call yourself an Artist, then.

‘art is why I get up in the morning but my definition ends there and it doesn't seem fair that I'm living for something I can't even define there you are right there in the meantime’ - ani difranco

yeah she's got a spark she leaps when she talks now i see. i always thought it would keep showing though. there are still tornadoes inside of me but i think most of the time my face sits blank. my back hunched over the bar elbows supporting arms supporting hands supporting face pillars for an empty stare. is that why you don't come around anymore? do you know that it is your presence that throws me into cold shoulders and strong square jaw? sorry. that's my only defense, and i guess it feels frigid. you're ready to have fun again. i am too.

you know, so many people leave town when art fair comes, like ‘we must get out,’ but it’s my favourite time of year, it’s when ann arbor comes alive. and maybe that comes from having been a teenager in moscow when the soviet union was falling; overnight, all of these art vendors sprung up that were selling their wares outside of the subway station—and they were cheap because of there was a financial collapse, you’d get these incredible pieces for next to nothing! i think about that a lot, how art for me is tied with freedom, and so i celebrate it.

(i'm realizing now that without quotes, the above sounds that it's attributable to me as a piece of writing, instead of sounding like speech i'm remembering and capturing from someone else. it was spoken by a faculty member at work today during a conversation about the weekend.)
