secrets become both more powerful and more frightening once they slip into this realm, where they no longer rest within the confines of one mind.

“have you been talking with your dad?” “no, not really,” she said, then admitted, “i’m not sure i know how.” “well, i spent 45 minutes with him on saturday and he’s good one-on-one.” “i know…it’s just…we didn’t talk on the phone before he got diagnosed, and i don’t see how that would work now.” she didn’t want cross-border phone calls, she wanted to look into her father’s eyes and see the moments of lucidity filter through his stare. “terri has started going to garage sales, just the two of them. and i’d like to do that too. not take him to garage sales, even though i love that, because that’s something i want him to preserve with terri, i want that to be theirs. but maybe there’s another activity he and i could do together.” she thought about her one-speed in the basement and hoisting it up the stairs and down a few blocks to the bike shop for a tune-up. she’d been meaning to take it in for some time. she remembered the bike rack she had for years, cobwebbed in the cellar. her father enjoyed biking last summer, maybe that could be there thing together when she was at home.
