NEWSWEEK INTERNATIONAL EDITIONS: Highlights and Exclusives, July 26, 2004 Issue Behind the Smile. The conclusion was, to say the least, surprising: a World Value Survey of people in 65 nations, conducted recently by an international group of social scientists, decided that the world's happiest people lived in Nigeria, reports Senior Editor Richard Ernsberger Jr. Could Nigerians, who live in a volatile, poverty-stricken country, really be more content than, say, proudly prosperous Americans, whose bountiful nation placed a dismal 16th on the list? http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/07-18-2004/0002212272&EDATE= The world's happiest people lived in Nigeria

"he believes [that] it would be disastrous if humans lacked greed to the extent that they could acheive a general state of happiness or contentment. In Phelan's view, this is because happy people tend not to do much, or crave much--poison for a modern consumer economy." John F Schumaker, "In Greed We Trust" New Internationalist 369 July 2004, p34

what are you talking about, ST? to be greedy and jealous is not to be happy, but happy people arent greedy nor are they jealous, so they need to do little to maintain there happiness except what it takes to be happy, like going for a walk with a friend and just talking about nothing and music and writing and more nothing and the moon in the river and the river and the stars and the spaces between the stars and ... yes... just like that.. but i don't know why you are accussing me, or what you are accussing me of (no hostility)

those statements didn't have anything to do with achieving or maintianing happiness. they were on the subject of greed. how do you feel about capitalism? do you think that successful people in a capitalist society are just greedy? if greed is bad, then should the government stop people from achieving too much success? and if you want to stop them from achieving "too much success" are you giving in to jealousy? forgive me if I have made a bad assumtion. I thought perhaps you may be jealous of those who are "greedy" ...

so is this blathe assuming that there are different stages, different degrees of happiness? what i meant when i asked what happiness is, how is happiness measured, how can anyone decipher who is happier where is happier when is happier? i guess i just don't understand.

i'm sorry whitechocolatewalrus. all you asked was "and what is happiness exactly?" happiness is not measured. degrees of happiness are abstract. they can only be measured by yourself. there is no sense in trying to figure out "happiness levels". you can have all kinds of degrees if you want: sort of happy, very happy, really happy, whatever. besides I think too many of us are confusing happiness with satifaction anyways ^_^ ...

the value of life is not the same to any one person, just as happiness does not stem out of the same occurance or non occurance in life. yes happiness is related to a person's particular view of the value of life, but how is it that anyone can say one place is happier than the next when levels of happiness are only relative to a single person? I can not say "I am happier than you" because really, how is happiness measured? How can Nigeria be ranked the happiest country if there is nothing to measure their happiness compared to other countries by? I seem to be having major difficulties in my thought process and then relating my crazed thoughts to writing. Forgive me.

i'm not ST... i'm quite happy with who i am in my almost inability to experience moderation (that is, emotionally speaking). i'm a poet, a writer... and as that makes me an artist i can be happy and not happy at once and my only greed is for a job that allows me to work 3 days a week and live, and ive found it
