I need to get the 1972 edgar winter album "They only come out at night", because it has one of my fave class rock tunes, "Frankenstein". I used to play this in the middle of my punk rock / metal / industrial / jazz / ambient / torture radio program in college.

sure bobby. People should be nicer to classic rock. If a person doesn't have some classic rock somewhere in their bones, I think their ability to appreciate today's "original" artists is lacking important perspective. It's all about influence. The recent "influential" greats like Nirvana, Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, etc, all list previous artists as part of their muse. I'd say that 99% of today's music - punk, alt.rock, metal, dance, and everything in between - owes huge props to previous bands. When you go far enough back, there are great bands that paved the way with epic careers, creating a foundation of acceptance that all of todays bands use to survive. I'm talking about groups like Led Zeppelin, The Who, James Brown, Jonny Cash, Elvis, Janice Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, the Nevell Brothers, etc. Sadly, a great deal of margin opperators are over looked, the "classic" fringe bands like The Sonics, Blue Cheer, The Stooges, The Raiders, The Fuggs, etc. Of course, if really take it back, you need to acknowledge the raw, murky roots of rock and roll, which is blues. This is where funk, rap, jazz, electronic, and everything else we listen to got it's life blood. beyond that. These roots are undeniable, laid down by Willie Dixon, Cab Calloway, Mose Allison, Lightning Hopkins, Little Richard, Hank Williams, Jerry Lewis, Buddy Holly ... and a cast of so many others you could never name them all. When you play "Throttlecrack" or "Stompfuck" or "Coldeath" or "Modular Vibe" or "Annie Screechick" or whatever newskool band you're into, you're severely kidding yourself if you think those bands and artists owe nothing to the people that kicked the doors of rock and roll wide open.

It's the Neville Brothers, buddy. they rock, at least give them the respect of spelling their family name correctly.

sorry, love. I was in the zone, and the spellchecker punted. I almost just said "The Meters" but thought that was to obscure a reference and would not give the bro's enough credit.

but isn't it obvious? i mean maybe i've thought about it too much, but it doesn't even seem like anyone denies any of those old bands credit. a lot of people do like them and do give them credit. punk was started to oppose bands like that. they didn't want long solos and big rock star personas. they wanted trite, easy, pissed off songs that anyone could do. without classic rock, the bands that are making music now would be making classic rock instead of the music they are making now, and the bands from the future would be making the music bands are making now make sense?

right on, bobby. I thought the historical influences were widely recognised as well, but never over estimate the common sense of the masses.

I guess I've been around an higher amount of classic rock bashing than most. And I think I was a classic rock basher myself for a couple of misguided teen-aged years. punk is a sort of "anti-music", but it's a little misguided. If you enjoy playing the guitar, than taking out your guitar solo is not accomplishing anything except blown your a chance to play a cool guitar solo. doncha think?
