Expression is expression and not to be confused with meaning, or intention...and certainly not with reality. Watching the blather_purists trying to creep their way into this place 5 long years after their last attempt..it occurred to me that this needed to be set straight. I know of no other place on the web where the right to express WHATEVER you see fit has been so carefully preserved. That's not about to go away if I have anything to say about it. Want some extremes? You got it. Want to create expectations? They will not be met. Shocking? Maybe..maybe not. So what if it is? Who shocked who? The blatherskite who blathed a thing almost certainly wasn't shocked to write it. If they had been, they probably wouldn't have blathed it. It's always the reader that is shocked or dismayed or disappointed. It's always the readers who feel entitled to then impose their dismay or what-not upon the words..which again...are nothing...and then upon the author...who does not know them..only the words. So what if you build sand castles, and I make a catbox out of the sandbox complete with sand turds and a sand kitty? If a piece of expression shocks you..why are you shocked? If it saddens you..why are you saddened? If it lightens your day...why is that so? The easiest and most mindless thing in the world to do is to go with your feelings..rant and rave..cry and sigh and giggle and snicker..without ever pondering why. blah blah blah Why is some stranger halfway across the world an authority on how another should express themselves? And what does that stranger's emotional response have to do with the person whose writing evoked it? What did some random reader in Poughkeepsie have to do with Hemingway or Erma Bombeck? Since when is Agatha Christie in any way related to the copy-cat killer's crime? You express yourself. You move on. You plant a seed and go..not knowing when, how or even if it will grow.
