psychology
no reason I'm taking a psychology class, and I find it really interesting. I really understand the content, and not only that, it provokes thought in me, and arguments, and hypothetical situations. With something like this, it seems as though it should make sense to try and go somewhere with it, and I know there are lots of jobs related to psychology. But I think to be good in one of those jobs, you have to be really empathetic so you can understand what people go through...and I am, but that's what makes me more affected. I have trouble distancing myself, and I wonder if that happens to most people. If it doesn't, I'm jealous. I wonder if psychologists often feel pain from confessions and connections with patients. Poses sort of a paradoxical problem. 020401

no reason ...I also learned in class today that cognitive theorists try to change depressive patients' ways of thinking, as in they try to stop them from thinking everything is their fault. I was thinking about that and wondering if those people's thoughts turn so much the opposite way that they become overly confident and never accept that anything could be there fault anymore. 020401

no reason oops "their" fault.

Her over there. remember not to over-analyze. It's just as bad as (if not worse than) under-analyzing.
People are people, crazy or not.

User24 I did psychology A Level.

It was quite fun, but then our teacher told us that the only reason people go into psychology is to work themselves out, and I agreed.

Freud is a nutcase with insight.
Watson & Rayner kicked ass.

anon There is only one type of psychologist that works with crazy people or does research about crazy people.

The rest of us (like social, cognitive, animal behaviorists, sensation/perception, health...) actually do _real_ research on actual behavior and contribute to the world.

It is a pet peeve of mine that when somebody says "psychologist" the only kind people think of are the Freudian nutcases with the couch. My office mate does work on language acquisition in children (which has nothing to do with trauma, treating patients or anything like that!) and I work on group dynamics and loyalty in work teams! And we are both psychologists!

75% of the psychologists in the world are NOT clinical! Please don't think those assholes hold the only knowledge of human behavior!!!

oldephebe when i entered the world of business i realized i was under utilizing the potential synergy and by extention impact my small group could make on divisional and corporate objectives. I began an individual study of group dynamics and personality styles..and i gotta say it increased my value to the firm and our group synergy exponentially.

thankyou for sharing your personal and professional experiential authority with us..

smurfus rex I thought I wanted to be a counselor, so I enrolled in a counseling psych master's program after undergrad psych, right?

I know I can't speak for everyone, but "counseling" as a division of psychology depresses me. If that's your thing, then go for it. But don't believe that that's the only way to practice psychology.

There's forensic psych, executive coaching, career counseling, human resources (tho I wouldn't encourage that either :)), *hostage negotiations*, basically anything that has to do with human behavior and human motivations.

I'm looking at a forensic program right now...
