of course my symbol would be music but my theory professor told an interesting story in class the other day when we were discussing the universal appeal of beethoven. he was watching t.v. and an american orchestra, perhaps the new york philharmonic, was playing in tokyo. they were playing a beethoven symphony. (he couldn't remember which one) the thing that struck him was that they would show the audience periodically and the polite nature of the japanese prevented them from showing anything but rapt attention. they didn't move a muscle as they listened or even between movements. but when the performance was over, their appreciation washed over the orchestra in thunderous applause. "beethoven is the most pathetic composer that ever lived" symphony 7 movement 2 it will get you every time. we sat listening in the dark in his room and his roommate walked in in the middle of it and said "i think i'll sit down and listen to this. it sounds like pretty good stuff." and he sat there with a bunch of rabid violinists and discussed the merits of beethoven from a radiohead/bjork lover's standpoint.

Growth, Life. Everything can be done in gestures. Though gestures have different meanings across cultures and traditions, they do mean something to both. That makes it universal. But for universal in sameness? I don't think there really are any. We all share a heritage as people. We come from this blue rock, so we make alike observations. Similar Ambiance breeds Simlar Conclusions. But, certain things, like growth, seem to be universally understood. Life is something that any sentient being anywhere could understand. The processes could be different. Perhaps growth is a decadence for some. (is rambling) just things to think about, when you can't sleep, even though you've your security wrapped about you and you feel snug against the pillows and covers, and pondering in idealistic formats is a thing of grandeur. I don't think, for sake of true universal homoganized meaning, there is a universal symbol. There_is_no_homogenic_universal_symbol. cry for the worlds apart. pray for a seperation that understands.

there is nothing universal. you can create sybols that are within the general realm of expeirience and will recognized by 95% of the world. but there will always be that 5% who will not recognize the symbol, who does not fit in the realm of others thoughts. someone who thinks outside of the box. the only things universal are abstract and beyond material representation

Just a note, sign language varies from language to lanuage, just like spoken words. Even though ASL (Amerian Sign Langauge) came from FSL (French Sign Language), they are different. They all have their similarities, of course. Just like English words sound similar to their romatic langauge base. However, at international conventions of the deaf, people will be "chatting" quite well be the second day. Actions speak louder than words. Wait a minute...shouldn't it be actions speak more loudly than words?...
