girl_jane How would one define "woman"?
simply female?
by age?
by physical maturity?
maturity in general?
Would one think of me as a woman or not?

Zoe it's weird. i never thought i would like being called a woman. after learning about the movement though, i am proud to be a woman. i have talents that no male will ever have. i am a woman, not a girl, not someone to be taken advantage of... so there! 020528

Hekate I just read Maria Sabina's dictated autobiography, along with transcripts of some of her chants. She reaffirms what I know, that healing looks many different ways, and that the path of healing is dictated by the source of power we draw upon. She very specifically distinguishes herself, way of healing, and role in her culture, from other modalities. She is not a sorcerer, she is not a curer: she is a wise woman. She is of Christ, of Mary, of the Saints. She speaks to the "little children" (ie fungi.) She draws upon the book of knowledge, and the words she speaks when doing a healing vigil come from that. She dances and eats with the Principal Ones. She makes sounds like so so so si, ki, ki, so, so. She enters the world of the dead, and then goes to the very bottom, to find the root cause of someones illness. She sings the illness away, she tells evil to leave, she invites souls back to their bodies: all with words. I_sing_the_body_electric indeed. She eats the mushrooms, and has the ill person and any one else in attendance eat them too. She only begins when the sun sets, and stops when the sun rises. Sometimes she kills a chicken and puts the carcass on the ill part of the body to absorb the illness. The carcass is buried outside somewhere that the dogs won't get to. She calls herself a water woman, a swimming woman, a sainted and pure woman. Her chanting, every line of it, is a prayer of devotion. She did not learn this wisdom, it was given to her in the womb. She says the wisdom she has, the ability to listen and speak to the little ones, the ability to heal illness, is intrinsic within her, and is not something that can be taught. The little ones told her how to heal, and she listened.

There is a way that I pray, that I am devoted, that I can heal. The sounds and words that come out when I am praying, in trance, are perfect. The stones tell me which ones to use and how to use them. All I have to do is keep listening, and keep myself clear. Maria Sabina spoke of how she has no garbage, that she is clear of that, which is how she can do the work she does. She was poor, dirt poor: she lived poor and died poor. She outlived two husbands and six children. She chopped wood, planted crops, sold coffee: worked hard her whole life. And she was still clear, still a sainted woman, still "a little woman of the networks of light."
