chasing_amy_theory
jennifer the chasing amy theory
invented (at least by name) by Kevin Smith
to end a movie so abruptly and so confusingly, that the audience returns several times to find out what the ending really means, created more profits for the movie.
also, the end a movie in the way that causes the audience to hate the movie, and talk about it with all of there friends, hence bringing more money to the movie.

either way, a very frustrated, yet intellegent way to to business

digable see also, all spike lee movies... 000103

Q It is deplorable and just plain wrong that the name of Amy is used for this method to irritate people and con money out of them. Amy should sue this character Smith for defamation or, in the alternative, a part - like 90 % - of the money movie makers make by applying his devious theory. 000103
...
jennifer understood
Amy, by and large, wasn't even the name of the main character of said movie (Alyssa, portrayed by Joey Lauren Smith) however, it was an intrigal part to the movie.

the Chasing Amy Theory wasn't even developed by Kevin Smith (as stated previously, Spike Lee is also a fan of this method) however, the term was coined for it's wholey recognizable brevity.

thank you

amy this Amy doesn't mind. i'm just glad to have my name in the title of a movie. 000103

sweets bews If Amy has a nice behind, then chasing her is a delight. That has nothing to do with movies, though. It is a shame though when the art of expression gets sold out for the art of selling a product or the art of making money. But you can't really talk about comercialism without talking about Capitalism and then you are talking about politics, and no one wants to do that...except for politicians, who are the benefactors of comercialism.

Silent Bob i dont think kevin intentionally made the ending "confusing"

i understood it ok...maybe you guys are just all dumbasses that weren't paying attention. i got it just fine the first time around.

jennifer not so confusing that you didn't understand what happened. but written so that it confused the viewers as to really why.
it's more like he ended it in a way that no one wanted (most wanted Alyssa and Holden to hook-up) so in order to find out why he chose the ending, the audience will go again and again.

it's a very wise career move
that, and casting Ben Affleck

The Schleiffen Man And why not cast Ben in Chasing Amy? He was in Mall Rats! He was the guy that liked to screw people in uncofortable positions (not the back of a volkswagen =P ). 000604

silentbob they cancelled the show! damn them! he says they'll have the other 4 on video or something.

anyway.

I have another Chasing_Amy_Theory.
You take a metaphor. You rationalize it to how it might relate to and affect people, then you create characters and a story and make a movie out of it. And somewhere in the movie you tie it all together in a neat little package so the audience has realized what the title of the movie meant.
St. Elmo's Fire did it. Chasing Amy did it. The Breakfast Club did it. I think you could say the Fifth Element did it, but of course that as well as many other things is argueable. anyway...

Casey The ending was not confusing to me. And what's wrong with confusing endings, they leave the door to imagination, theory, and different perspectives wide open. 020221
